New tenant found for New Leaf site

Coffeed, a local coffee shop chain, has agreed to take over operation of New Leaf Restaurant & Bar, the popular Fort Tryon Park eatery and event space that abruptly closed in December.
On December 28, New Leaf was shut down for several months to allow for roof repairs on the 79-year-old building, which is owned by the Parks Department.
It was announced at that time that the New York Restoration Project (NYRP), the non-profit outfit that ran the cafe since its 2001 inception, was bowing out of operations.
Parks Department spokesman Sam Biederman said that the NYRP was responsible for finding a new operator for the site, subject to Parks approval.
“We think Coffeed will be a great partner,” commented Biederman.
The coffee chain had an existing relationship with the Parks Department — Coffeed runs LIC Landing, an outdoor cafe in Queens that is also a Parks concession.
The Fort Tryon restaurant will retain the New Leaf name, said Frank Raffaele, founder and chief executive officer of Coffeed.
He said his company plans to change very little about the popular venue.
“New Leaf is a gem in New York City, and is a very important part of that neighborhood,” remarked Raffaele. “We don’t want to change what made it great.”
Coffeed will retain New Leaf’s previous chef, who will continue to set a full-service menu.
Most of the food Coffeed sells is sourced locally, with some of it grown on the rooftop of its Queens headquarters. Raffaele said that more local ingredients will be incorporated into New Leaf’s menu.
The site will continue to host weddings and other activities, and will eventually offer expanded breakfast hours.
Five wedding receptions that had been previously scheduled for spring 2015 will go on as planned, said Raffaele, who hopes to reopen New Leaf in mid-April.
“When people return to the restaurant, it will be the same New Leaf they loved before,” he stated. “They’ll just notice a fresh coat of paint.”
Coffeed, based in Long Island City, currently has four other New York City locations.
The company is known for giving 3 to 10 percent of its earnings to local charities. Donations from New Leaf will be given to the NYRP and Fort Tryon Park Trust.
Raffaele said that Coffeed had been seeking to open a store in upper Manhattan for some time, making the New Leaf opportunity an ideal fit.
Coffeed will also open a Bronx location within the next year, he added.
“New Leaf is a beautiful, landmark building, and we’re now the proud stewards of that space,” commented Raffaele.

‘Coffeed’, una cadena de tiendas locales, ha estado de acuerdo en operar el Restaurante y Barra New Leaf, el popular espacio para cenar y para eventos en el Parque Fort Tryon que cerró abruptamente en diciembre.
El 28 de diciembre, New Leaf fue cerrado por varios meses para permitir unas reparaciones en el techo del viejo edificio de 79 años, el cual es propiedad del Departamento de Parques.
En ese momento fue anunciado que el Proyecto de Restauración Nueva York (NYRP, por sus siglas en inglés), la organización que administra el café desde su creación, se estaba saliendo de las operaciones.
El portavoz del Departamento de Parques, Sam Biederman dijo que NYRP era responsable de encontrar un nuevo operador para el lugar, sujeto a la aprobación de Parques.
“Creemos que ‘Coffeed’ será un gran socio”, comentó Biederman.
La cadena de café tiene una relación existente con el Departamento de Parques – ‘Coffeed’ administra LIC Landing, un café al aire libre en Queens que también es una concesión de Parques.

La mayor parte de la comida que vende ‘Coffeed’ es producida localmente, con alguna de ella cosechada en la azotea de sus oficinas centrales en Queens. Raffaele dijo que más ingredientes locales serán incorporados en el menú de New Leaf.
El lugar continuará teniendo bodas y otras actividades y eventualmente ampliará las horas de desayuno.
Cinco recepciones de bodas que habían sido programadas previamente para la primavera del 2015 seguirán según lo planeado, dijo Raffaele, quien espera reabrir New Leaf a mediados de abril.
“Cuando la gente regrese al restaurante, será el mismo New Leaf que amaron antes”, señaló. “Solo notaran una fresca capa de pintura”.
‘Coffeed’, con sede en Long Island City, actualmente tiene otras cuatro ubicaciones en la ciudad de Nueva York.
La compañía es conocida por dar del 3 al 10 por ciento de sus ganancias a organizaciones benéficas locales. Las donaciones de New Leaf serán entregadas a NYRP y al Fideicomiso del Parque Fort Tryon.
Raffaele dijo que ‘Coffeed’ había estado tratando de abrir una tienda en el Alto Manhattan por algún tiempo, por lo que la oportunidad de New Leaf fue ideal.
‘Coffeed’ también abrirá uno en el Bronx dentro del próximo año, añadió.
