Mother’s Day – From Fancy to Simple

Mother’s Day is right around the corner.
And it is our special day, YUM’s, ladies, friends!
Even if you haven’t felt your best or have been beset by a bit more stress of late, take this day to commemorate everything you, your family and your children have accomplished.
Let them shower you with the gifts – and treats – you deserve.
Here are some ideas you can all take part in.
The New York Botanical Garden
The New York Botanical Garden is hosting a “Mother’s Day Weekend Garden Party” for families. Enjoy the spring blooms, while kids play lawn games, fly kites, and create greeting cards just for you. There will also be a special Bronx Arts Ensemble Family Concert, on Sun., May 12 featuring a performance of the favorite kids’ tale, Jack and the Beanstalk.

Wave Hill
Make it a crafty celebration at Wave Hill with “Sachets and Floral Fantasy for Mom” activities for everyone to enjoy. Although the scenery alone is a treat, the real gift will be the paper flowers and unique floral gifts your kids will create for you to remember the day. Activity is free with admission.

Keep It Simple With a Picnic
Inwood Hill Park and Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan are excellent grounds on which to enjoy a simple or elaborate picnic. Fort Tryon, in particular, offers stunning views of the Hudson River and the Heather Garden is an enchanting space to visit. Just bring a blanket, a meal for all, and let nature handle the rest. And let’s make sure to pick up after ourselves, and to dispose of any garbage and to recycle all recyclable goods. Mother Earth will be thankful too.
Jewelry for Mom
Our kids love making us special little gifts on Mother’s Day. It’s when they get to show us how much they’ve learned to make and do with their own hands. At the Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights, kids can get creative in a jewelry-making workshop with Miranda Nelli. Not only will they walk away with a great gift for you, but they’ll also learn real jewelry techniques and skills that may well last a lifetime. The activity is free, but advanced registration is required.

Out of the Box, Out of this World
If you want to take your celebration out of your neck of the woods, then help other moms from around the world by joining the Mother’s Day Movement at mothersdaymovement.org.
Each year, the organization supports a new foundation that supports mothers and families from other countries.
This year’s recipient is “The Fistula Foundation”, which helps supports young mothers in developing countries and prevents devastating childbirth injuries. This activity is conducted best with older children, who will enjoy being part of something larger and can speak to a valuable lesson on compassion and concern for all mothers.
Laying Low at Home
Breakfast in bed has become a Mother’s Day routine in some homes, but if your little one is too young to prepare something in the kitchen, then make it a family activity. They’ll love spending this special time with you.
Besides, you are celebrating them as well for having allowed for this unique role in your life. And better yet, you’re entitled to a nap afterwards, no matter what!

El Día de las Madres está a la vuelta de la esquina. Es nuestro día especial, madres, YUM’s, amigas!
Aun si no se ha sentido de lo mejor o ha sido acosada por un poco más de estrés, tome este día para conmemorar todo lo que usted, su familia y sus niños han logrado. Deje que la llenen de regalos – y golosinas – que usted se merece. Aquí algunas ideas de las que todos ustedes pueden tomar parte.

El Jardín Botánico de Nueva York estará celebrando una “Fiesta en Jardín de Fin de Semana de las Madres” para las familias. Disfrute del florecer de la primavera, mientras los niños juegan en el césped, vuelan chiringas y crean postales para usted. También habrá un concierto familiar del ‘Bronx Arts Ensemble’, el domingo, 12 de mayo presentando uno de los cuentos favoritos de los niños, Jack y la Habichuela Mágica.

una celebración creativa en Wave Hill con actividades de “Bolsitas y Fantasía Florar para Mamá” para que todos puedan disfrutar. Manténgalo simple con un picnic
El Parque Inwood Hill y el Parque Fort Tryon en el Norte de Manhattan son excelentes para disfrutar un picnic sencillo o elaborado. Fort Tryon, en particular, ofrece vistas increíbles del Rio Hudson y el Jardín Heather es un lugar encantado para visitar. Solo lleve una sábana, comida para todos y deje que la naturaleza se encargue del resto. No se olvide de llevarse la basura y reciclar todo lo que pueda. ¡Nuestra Madre Tierra se lo agradecerá!

A nuestros niños les encanta hacer regalos especiales el día de la Madre. Es cuando pueden mostrarnos cuanto han aprendido con sus propias manos. En la Mansión Morris-Jumel en Washington Heights, los niños pueden ponerse creativos en un taller de joyería con Miranda Nelli. No solo saldrán con un gran regalo para usted, sino que también aprenderán técnicas reales de joyería y destrezas que durarán toda una vida. Diferente, y Fuera de este Mundo
Si usted desea llevar su celebración más allá en el Norte de Manhattan y el Bronx, entonces ayude a otras madres del mundo uniéndose al Movimiento día de las Madres en mothersdaymovement.org. Cada año, la organización apoya una nueva fundación que apoya madres y familias de otros países.
El recipiente de este año lo es “La Fundación Fistula”, la cual ayuda a apoyar jóvenes madres, en países pobres y previene lesiones devastadoras de parto. Esta actividad se lleva a cabo mejor con niños mayores, que disfrutarán el ser parte de algo más grande, y también sabiendo que es con usted – y su amor y compasión – haciéndolo.
Con Calma en la Casa
El desayuno en la cama se ha convertido en una rutina del día de las Madres en algunos hogares, pero si su hijo/a es muy pequeño para preparar algo en la cocina, entonces hágalo una actividad familiar. A ellos les encanta pasar ese tiempo especial con usted. Además, usted también los está celebrando a ellos por haberle permitido este único rol en su vida. ¡Y no se olvide, siempre merece una siesta!
