It’s official.

Bill de Blasio will be the first Democrat in two decades to serve as the 109th mayor of New York City, after having defeated Republican Joe Lhota this past Tues., Nov. 5th.

De Blasio, the city’s Public Advocate, won in a landslide, with the largest margin of victory for a non-incumbent in the city’s history – with over 74% of the vote to Lhota’s 24%.

Overwhelming support was reflected for de Blasio by virtually every demographic. According to an Edison Research exit poll, 96% of black voters and up to 85% of Latino voters backed de Blasio.

De Blasio, who addressed listeners in Spanish during his victory speech, reiterated the liberal positions on which he staked his candidacy.

Ladies and gentleman, give it up for the next First Lady of New York City!

My fellow New Yorkers: today, you spoke out loudly and clearly for a new direction in our city, united by a belief that our city should leave no New Yorker behind.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in the campaign and humbled by it. And let me say to all of you, from the bottom of my heart: thank you!

But let me be clear. Our work – all of our work – is really just beginning. And we have no illusions about the task that lies ahead.

Tackling inequality isn’t easy; it never has been, and never will be. The challenges we face have been decades in the making, and the problems we set out to address will not be solved overnight.

But make no mistake: the people of this city have chosen a progressive path, and tonight we set forth on it, together, as one city.

Estamos muy orgullosos de lo que hemos logrado en esta campaña. Seré claro: Nuestro trabajo acaba de empezár. Los problemas de nuestra ciudad no serán fácil de resolver. Pero, una cosa es clara: la gente de esta ciudad ha elegido el camino progresista, y esta noche empezámos a caminar, juntos, como una sola ciudad.

To everyone who knocked on doors, made phone calls, persuaded your friends, held house parties, or even tweeted about the campaign: this victory is yours! Thank you so much!

There are so many inspiring individuals and organizations so many friends who made this victory possible. If I mentioned each name, we’d be here all night – you know who you are, and you know I wouldn’t be here without you.

I do want to acknowledge two close friends who guided and advised me at every turn, even when the polls didn’t look so hot. Please give it up for Ambassador Patrick Gaspard and Nick Baldick.

And I want to say how grateful I am to Bill Hyers and Emma Wolfe and the best campaign team this city has ever seen!

And a special thank you to two people who have helped me since my first run for City Council, here in this neighborhood: Gabrielle Fialkoff and Jim Crounse.

But the people I am most grateful to – and most grateful for – are standing right next to me. My partner in life, my best friend in the world, she is brilliant and every bit as compassionate as she is tough. The love of my life: Chirlane McCray!

And of everything I have to feel fortunate about, I am most lucky to be the father of two extraordinary children: Chiara and Dante. They make me proud every single day. And they’re very stylish.

Tonight I feel the deepest appreciation for generations of my family, including those no longer with us and a special thank you to my Italian family and friends in Rome, and in my Grandfather’s hometown of Sant’Agata dei Goti and my Grandmother’s hometown of Grassano. To them I say: grazie a tutti!

Earlier this evening, I received a call from Joe Lhota. Even though we have our differences, I know he loves this city as much as I do.

To everyone whose vote I didn’t earn today: I promise that I won’t stop working to earn your trust.

I’ve spoken often about a Tale of Two Cities. That inequality – that feeling of a few doing very well, while so many slip further behind – that is the defining challenge of our time. Because inequality in New York is not something that only threatens those who are struggling.

The stakes are so high for every New Yorker. And making sure no son or daughter of New York falls behind defines the very promise of our city.

New York is the brightest embodiment of the idea behind American greatness: It doesn’t matter where you were born what you look like what your religion is, or who you love.

If you have brains and heart and guts and faith, this city – more than any other in the world – will offer you a real chance at a better life.

For generations, New York has meant opportunity. That’s what it has been to so many, and that what it must be again.

It’s how immigrants who arrived at Ellis Island – those with nothing to their names but a few bags and high hopes – started businesses that became bedrocks of entire communities.

It’s how kids who have grown up poor, from every borough, have become CEOs and playwrights fashion designers and architects doctors and teachers.

It’s how for generations, even in the face of untold economic stress, working parents in New York knew this city had their back they knew if they gave it all they had, this city would reward their kids with a shot, a real shot, at something better.

New Yorkers are strong and resilient, dedicated and big-hearted. Our greatness is not accidental. But neither is it inevitable.

To maintain that greatness and to ensure that our brightest days are ahead of us, we must commit ourselves to progressive ideas that will lift us all.

It won’t be easy, but it is essential. It is a challenge I know this city is up to because I’ve seen the commitment of New Yorkers from every borough, every neighborhood, every income bracket the commitment to rise to this challenge of our time together.

The best and the brightest are born in every neighborhood. We all have a shared responsibility – and a shared stake – in making sure their destiny is defined by how hard they work and how big they dream, not by their Zip code.

So when we call on the wealthiest among us to pay just a little more in taxes to fund universal Pre-K and after-school programs we aren’t threatening anyone’s success. We are asking those who’ve done very well to ensure that every child has the same opportunity to do just as well as they have.

That’s how we all rise together.

Public safety is a prerequisite for the thriving neighborhoods that create opportunity in this city. So is respect for civil liberties. The two are not mutually exclusive; in fact we must have both.

We must work to promote a real partnership between the best police force in the world and the communities they protect from danger – be it local or global.

New Yorkers on both sides of the badge understand this. We’re all hungry for an approach that acknowledges we are stronger and safer as a city when police and residents work hand-in-hand.

That’s how we all rise together.

Opportunity in New York springs from strong neighborhoods. When we demand that big developers build affordable housing, and fight to keep our hospitals from becoming luxury condos, it’s not to punish the real estate industry.

We do these things so the everyday, hardworking people who anchor our neighborhoods can live and work and be healthy in the communities they love.

That’s how we all rise together.

New York is no stranger to big challenges. We’ve faced the depths of the Depression, we’ve stared down the hateful destruction of terrorists, we’ve endured the ferocity of gale force winds and surging tides, and each and every time, New Yorkers have faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles with grit and determination and an unyielding commitment to one another and we have – always – prevailed.

The challenge before us today is different from any we’ve faced before: it has no distinct or dramatic catalyst, no insidious face, no electronic image on a radar map. The growing inequality we see, the crisis of affordability we face, it has been decades in the making. But its slow creep upon this city cannot weaken our resolve.

And it won’t.

The people of our city come from so many different places, with so many different stories. By our nature, we are clear eyed and realistic. Yet we stand united – united by a shared hope, a shared optimism, a shared faith that there’s no problem bigger than our city, no adversity more powerful than the might of our collective ideas and action.

New York’s resilience is legendary; our toughness is unmatched; and our will is unbreakable.

So I say to you tonight:

The road ahead will be difficult, but it will be traveled;

Progressive changes won’t happen overnight, but they will happen;

There will be many obstacles that stand in our way, but we will overcome them.

And know this: I will never stop fighting for the city I love, and we all love, so much. And I will never forget that as mayor, I work for you.

And we as New Yorkers, people whose stories wouldn’t be possible anywhere else on earth, we know that we are not defined by the cold steel of our skyscrapers, but by the strength and compassion and boldness of our collective spirit.

We are all at our best when every child, every parent, every New Yorker has a shot. And we reach our greatest heights when we all rise together.

Es oficial.

Bill de Blasio será el primer demócrata en dos décadas en servir como el alcalde número 109 de la ciudad de Nueva York, después de haber derrotado al republicano Joe Lhota el pasado martes 5 de noviembre.

De Blasio, Defensor de la ciudad, ganó por un amplio margen, con el mayor margen de victoria para un no-titular en la historia de la ciudad, más del 74% de los votos, y el 24% para Lhota.

El abrumador apoyo se reflejó para de Blasio prácticamente en todos los grupos demográficos. De acuerdo con una encuesta de salida de Edison Research, el 96% de los votantes negros y hasta un 85% de los votantes latinos respaldaron a de Blasio.

De Blasio, quien se dirigió a los oyentes en español durante su discurso de victoria, reiteró las posiciones liberales en las que basó su candidatura.

Damas y caballeros, ¡un aplauso para la próxima primera dama de la ciudad de Nueva York!

Mis conciudadanos: hoy ustedes hablaron en voz alta y de forma clara sobre una nueva dirección para nuestra ciudad, unidos por la creencia de que nuestra ciudad no debe dejar a ningún neoyorquino atrás.

Estamos orgullosos de lo que hemos logrado en la campaña y humildes por ella. Y déjenme decirles a todos ustedes, desde el fondo de mi corazón: ¡gracias!

Pero permítanme ser claro. Nuestro trabajo -todo nuestro trabajo- está realmente empezando. Y no nos hacemos ilusiones sobre la tarea que tenemos por delante.

La lucha contra la desigualdad no es fácil, nunca lo ha sido y nunca lo será. Los desafíos que enfrentamos se han fabricado han durante décadas y los problemas que nos propusimos abordar no serán resueltos de un día para otro.

Pero no nos equivoquemos: la gente de esta ciudad ha elegido un camino progresivo, y esta noche nos establecemos en él, en conjunto, como una ciudad.

A todos los que tocaron las puertas, hicieron llamadas telefónicas, convencieron a sus amigos, celebraron fiestas en casa, o incluso tuitearon acerca de la campaña: ¡la victoria es de ustedes! ¡Muchas gracias!

Hay tantas personas y organizaciones inspiradoras, tantos amigos que hicieron posible esta victoria. Si mencionara cada nombre, estaríamos aquí toda la noche. Ustedes saben quiénes son y saben que yo no estaría aquí si no fuera por ustedes.

Quiero reconocer a dos amigos íntimos que me guiaron y me aconsejaron en todo momento, incluso cuando las encuestas no se veían tan favorecedoras. Por favor, un aplauso para el embajador Patrick Gaspard y Nick Baldick.

He hablado a menudo sobre una historia de dos ciudades. Esa desigualdad -el sentimiento de unos pocos de que todo va muy bien mientras que muchos otros se quedan atrás- es el desafío que define nuestra época. Porque la desigualdad en Nueva York no es algo que sólo amenaza a los que están luchando.

Los riesgos son muy altos para todos los neoyorquinos. Y asegurarse de que ningún hijo o hija de un neoyorquino se quede atrás, es la promesa misma de nuestra ciudad.

Nueva York es la encarnación más brillante de la idea de la grandeza americana: no importa dónde nació, cómo se ve usted, cuál sea su religión o a quién ama.

Si usted tiene cerebro, corazón, agallas y fe, esta ciudad -más que cualquier otra en el mundo- le ofrecerá una verdadera oportunidad para una vida mejor.

Durante generaciones, Nueva York ha significado oportunidad. Eso es lo que esta ciudad ha sido para muchos, y que lo que tiene que ser otra vez.

Es como los inmigrantes que llegaron a la Isla Ellis -aquellos que vinieron con nada más que sus nombres, unas cuantas bolsas y grandes esperanzas- y empezaron negocios que se convirtieron en pilares de comunidades enteras.

Es como los niños que crecieron en la pobreza de cada condado, se convirtieron en directores generales y dramaturgos, diseñadores de moda y arquitectos, médicos y maestros.

Es la forma en que, por generaciones, incluso ante un incalculable estrés económico, los padres trabajadores de Nueva York sabían que esta ciudad los apoyaría si daban todo lo que tenían, esta ciudad recompensaría a sus hijos con una oportunidad, una oportunidad real, para mejorar.

Los neoyorquinos son fuertes y resistentes, dedicados y de gran corazón. Nuestra grandeza no es accidental. Pero tampoco es inevitable.

Para mantener esa grandeza y para asegurarnos de que nuestros días más brillantes estén por delante de nosotros, debemos comprometernos con las ideas progresistas que nos harán crecer a todos.

No será fácil, pero es esencial. Es un reto que sé que esta ciudad puede lograr porque he visto el compromiso de los neoyorquinos de cada condado, cada barrio, cada grupo de ingresos, el compromiso de hacer frente a este desafío de nuestra época, juntos.

Los mejores y los más brillantes nacen en cada barrio. Todos tenemos una responsabilidad compartida -y una participación común- asegurarnos de que nuestro destino esté definido por lo duro que trabajamos y lo grande que soñamos, no por el código postal.

Así que cuando hacemos un llamado a los más ricos entre nosotros para pagar un poco más en impuestos para financiar Pre-K universal  y programas para después de la escuela, no estamos amenazando el éxito de ninguna persona. Les pedimos esto a los que lo han hecho muy bien para garantizar que todos los niños tengan la misma oportunidad de hacerlo tan bien como ellos.

Así es como nos levantamos todos juntos.

La seguridad pública es un requisito previo para los barrios prósperos que crean oportunidades en esta ciudad. También el respeto a las libertades civiles. Estos dos conceptos no son mutuamente excluyentes, de hecho debemos tener ambos.

Tenemos que trabajar para promover una verdadera asociación entre el mejor cuerpo de policía del mundo y las comunidades a las que protege del peligro, ya sea local o global.

Los neoyorquinos en ambos lados de la placa entienden esto. Todos tenemos hambre de un enfoque que reconozca que somos una ciudad más fuerte y más segura cuando la policía y los residentes trabajan mano a mano.

Así es como nos levantamos todos juntos.

Las oportunidades en Nueva York nacen de vecindarios fuertes. Cuando exigimos que los grandes desarrolladores construyan viviendas a precios asequibles, y luchamos por evitar que nuestros hospitales se conviertan en condominios de lujo, no es para castigar a la industria de los bienes raíces.

Hacemos estas cosas para que las personas que trabajan duro todos los días, quienes afianzan nuestros barrios, puedan vivir, trabajar y mantenerse saludables en las comunidades a las que aman.

Así es como nos levantamos todos juntos.

Nueva York no es ajena a los grandes retos. Nos hemos enfrentado a las profundidades de la Gran Depresión, hemos contemplado la odiosa destrucción de los terroristas, aguantamos la ferocidad de fuertes vientos y mareas crecientes y cada vez, los neoyorquinos hemos enfrentado obstáculos aparentemente insuperables con coraje, determinación y el compromiso inquebrantable entre nosotros y hemos logrado -siempre- prevalecer.

El reto que tenemos ante nosotros es diferente de cualquiera que hemos enfrentado antes: no tiene catalizador distintivo o dramático, ninguna cara insidiosa y sin imagen electrónica en un mapa de radar. La creciente desigualdad que vemos, la crisis de rentabilidad que enfrentamos, se han fabricado durante décadas Pero su lento arrastre sobre esta ciudad no puede debilitar nuestra determinación.

Y no lo hará.

La gente de nuestra ciudad proviene de muchos lugares diferentes, con tantas historias diferentes. Por nuestra naturaleza, somos claros y realistas. Y estamos unidos, unidos por una esperanza compartida, un optimismo compartido, una fe compartida de que no hay problema más grande que nuestra ciudad, que no existe adversidad más poderosa que la fuerza de nuestras ideas y la acción colectiva.

La resistencia de Nueva York es legendaria, nuestra fortaleza es inigualable y nuestra voluntad es inquebrantable.

Así que les digo a ustedes esta noche:

El camino por delante será difícil, pero se puede recorrer;

Los cambios progresivos no sucederán de un día al otro, pero ocurrirán;

Habrá muchos obstáculos que se interpondrán en nuestro camino, pero vamos a superarlos.

Y sepan esto: nunca voy a dejar de luchar por la ciudad que amo, y que amamos, tanto. Y nunca voy a olvidar eso siendo alcalde, yo trabajo para ustedes.

Y nosotros como neoyorquinos, las personas cuyas historias no serían posibles en ningún otro lugar en la tierra, sabemos que no estamos definidos por el frío acero de los rascacielos, sino por la fuerza, la compasión y la audacia de nuestro espíritu colectivo.

Todos estaremos en nuestro mejor momento cuando cada niño, cada padre, cada neoyorquino tenga una oportunidad. Y llegamos a nuestras más grandes alturas cuando nos levantamos todos juntos.
