As New York City’s homeless population continues to rise, so does the burden it places on families, which comprise over 70 percent of the shelter population. Win, or Women in Need, a network providing shelter and supportive housing to families in the city, is attempting to relieve some of the stress by offering support for new mothers residing in its shelters. On Wed., Dec. 7, Win hosted an event for new and expectant moms at its Harlem site. About 50 pregnant women and mothers of new babies assembled to hear information on wellness and crib safety, and receive a free yoga demonstration. Attendees also received gift bags filled with baby care items, new diaper bags, and a free crib donated by Delta Children’s Products. Joseph Shamie, Co-President of Delta, gave the presentation on crib safety. “We are on a mission to help educate all parents on safe sleep habits with their children,” said Joseph in 2015 when he was honored for his community work, including having donated over 10,000 cribs to families in need. The idea for the new mothers’ event was spearheaded by Mara Kelly, a Win Partner and Founder of Cloak Collection, a line of dresses for nursing moms. “One of the benefits of this is it lets mothers connect with other women who are going through the same thing they are,” Kelly said. “As a society, I don’t think we really do enough to support homeless mothers.” “Being homeless is stressful enough, and being a mom on top of that is even more stressful,” added Pamela Brasier, Program Director of Win’s Harlem site. “This event offers them important information, and getting the free products takes a lot of the financial stress out of having a baby, and lets them focus on being a mom.” “This helps moms know that they’re not alone,” she said. Founded in 1983 as a shelter to house four homeless women and six children, Win now operates 10 family shelters and one women’s-only shelter throughout the city. The Win network currently houses about 4,700 people per night, including around 2,000 children. Win provides on-site child care at all of its shelters, Brasier said, and partners with health providers to offer women perinatal care. “We’re able to give women the support they need,” remarked Brasier, who said that Win intends to make the new mother’s forum a quarterly event. “Shelter moms are often a forgotten segment of the shelter population, and it’s important that their needs are recognized,” she said. It is an important issue for the Shamie family. Joseph and his brother, Sam, are Delta’s third-generation Co-Presidents, and together, they have grown the business into the world’s largest crib manufacturer while supporting many philanthropic causes. They created a “Safe Sleep” video with safety tips to avoid Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
