Emergency shelter facing closure

A small Inwood homeless shelter will soon shut its doors unless it can come up with more volunteers.
Since 1987, the Good Shepherd Shelter has served homeless women. The shelter is part of an emergency network made up of churches in the city that provide space for the homeless.
The shelter is small—with only six beds. But it is open on Friday nights—a night when many other shelters are closed.
Shelter Co-Director Sarah Townley said that the volunteer staff is not enough to keep the shelter operational. They have only been able to open four Fridays since December. “We are looking to re-structure and get a new group to keep it going and make it more sustainable” said Townley.
“We’re down to two volunteers for the overnight staff—myself included,” she said.
Originally the shelter was in service five days a week, with 30 volunteers.
But as volunteers drifted away, the shelter now only functions only one day a week.
Townley said that many of the volunteers became busy parental obligations, went into retirement or developed other time constraints.
“I have three children of my own, so I’m not able to do it very often anymore,” she said.
“It’s a big commitment to ask people to stay overnight,” she said.
Women staying at the shelter arrive by bus early Friday evening. They are given a snack or a sandwich. Volunteers arrive ahead of time to set up the beds. Lights are turned out by 9 p.m. The women are picked up early Saturday morning—typically about 6:30 a.m.—after a light breakfast.
One or two volunteers spend the night with the women. Others help with the set up or cleaning. To keep the shelter open at least one day a week, Townley estimated they would need at least 12 volunteers. Volunteers receive training and go through orientation at the shelter and at the Antonio Olivieri Drop-In Center.
The women arrive from the Olivieri Drop-In Center, where they have previously been screened for drugs, alcohol and weapons.
“In all the years, we’ve never really had a problem,” said Townley.
They are given an early dinner downtown but usually arrive hungry. Townley said that they are usually very grateful for a place to sleep. If the shelter isn’t open, they would have to spend the night in chairs at another location.
Volunteers often get to know the women who often come for several months before they find housing. Many of the guests are in their 70’s or 80’s. Others come right from work. “There’s a working homeless population that can’t afford the rents,” said Townley.
Volunteering is a big commitment, but the experience is also an opportunity, Townley said. “I’ve never regretted it. There’s a lot to learn from people going through this.”

Un pequeño refugio de Inwood para indigentes pronto cerrará sus puertas a menos que pueda contar con más voluntarios.
Desde 1987, el refugio Buen Pastor ha recibido a mujeres sin hogar. El albergue forma parte de una red de emergencia formada por iglesias de la ciudad que ofrecen espacio para personas sin hogar.
El refugio es pequeño, con sólo seis camas. Pero abre los viernes por la noche, una noche en que muchos otros refugios están cerrados.
La codirectora del albergue, Sarah Townley, dijo que el personal voluntario no es suficiente para mantener el refugio operando. Sólo han sido capaces de abrir cuatro viernes desde diciembre. “Estamos tratando de reestructurar y conseguir un nuevo grupo para mantenerlo en marcha y hacerlo más sostenible”, dijo Townley.
“Se reduce a dos voluntarios el personal nocturno, incluyéndome a mi” dijo.
Originalmente el refugio estaba en servicio cinco días a la semana, con 30 voluntarios.
Pero a medida que los voluntarios se alejaron, el albergue ahora sólo funciona un día a la semana.
Townley dijo que muchos de los voluntarios se convirtieron en padres ocupados, se jubilaron o desarrollaron otras limitaciones de tiempo.
“Tengo tres hijos propios, así que no soy capaz de hacerlo muy a menudo”, explicó.
“Es un gran compromiso pedir a la gente que pase la noche”, comentó.
Las mujeres que se alojan en el refugio llegan en autobús el viernes, temprano por la noche. Se les da un bocadillo o un emparedado. Los voluntarios llegan con anticipación para arreglar las camas. Las luces se apagan a las 9 p.m. Las mujeres son recogidas en la mañana del sábado, por lo general alrededor de las 6:30 a.m., después de un desayuno ligero.
Uno o dos voluntarios pasan la noche con las mujeres. Otros ayudan con el arreglo o la limpieza. Para mantener el refugio abierto por lo menos un día a la semana, Townley estima que necesitarían al menos 12 voluntarios. Los voluntarios reciben formación y pasan por orientación en el refugio y en el Centro Antonio Olivieri Drop-In. Las mujeres llegan del Centro Olivieri Drop-In donde han sido previamente revisadas por drogas, alcohol y armas.
“En todos los años, en realidad nunca hemos tenido un problema”, dijo Townley.
Se les da una cena temprano en el centro pero por lo general llegan con hambre. Townley dijo que suelen estar muy agradecidas por tener un lugar para dormir. Si el refugio no está abierto, tendrían que pasar la noche en sillas en otro lugar.
Los voluntarios a menudo llegan a conocer a las mujeres que vienen con frecuencia durante varios meses antes de que encuentren una vivienda. Muchos de los invitados están en sus años 70 o 80. Otros vienen directo del trabajo. “Hay una población trabajadora sin hogar que no puede pagar la renta”, dijo Townley.
El voluntariado es un gran compromiso, pero la experiencia es también una oportunidad, dijo Townley. “Nunca me he arrepentido de ello. Hay mucho que aprender de las personas que pasan por esto”.
