Finally, the Plan Inwood Deserves

Today, the City Council will take a historic step forward for Inwood. For decades, the community watched as new investment and opportunities shifted to every other corner of this city. And while other neighborhoods reaped the benefits of better jobs, tech-enabled education, world-class cultural institutions, and expanded parks, Inwood felt largely forgotten.
But feeling forgotten doesn’t exempt a community from hard realities. Inwood still felt the pressures of an increasingly expensive and growing city. Something needed to be done, and I applaud this Administration for working with the local community over the last three years and taking a bold move to improve their quality of life and secure a more equitable, prosperous future for those who call Inwood home.
I have known Mayor Bill de Blasio for 25 years, and I know that his commitment towards to the poor, the underserved and minorities is unwavering – one that touches his heart. Councilmember Rodríguez is pledged to vote in favor and I can tell you this is not an easy decision for him and one that I know he takes with great care. And I call on all of our elected officials in Northern Manhattan to work together to be sure that this plan works for the better of our community as it has been visualized by our Mayor.

Lantigua.Having worked in and served this community since 1980, I know the struggles this community has faced, and not just from a health outcomes and wellness, but also from economic opportunity and income mobility, quality housing and being able to live in dignity, access to education, and overall quality of life. While we have made significant strides as a community over the last several decades, investment in infrastructure and access to new affordable housing has been a persistent deficit.
With over $200 million in new public investment, the plan for Inwood directly tackles our affordability crisis by preserving and creating over 4,000 affordable along with new protections to help tenants fight harassment and eviction. The plan also ensures that permanently affordable housing will be generated as part of any new development. And if that’s not enough, Councilmember Rodríguez was also able to secure a commitment from the City to develop housing on several City-owned sites. All of these efforts working together bring a badly-needed affordable housing supply that this neighborhood has lacked for decades.
Additionally, the plan delivers the kind of education and training opportunities we need to compete in the 21st century economy. I am most excited about the over $50 million in capital improvements to our public schools, along with expanded STEM resources for teachers and students. As a professional in the medical field, I know first-hand how access to jobs in this sector can change lives. From upgraded science labs to a new STEM Institute that will prepare our students for college to a new CTE program focusing on Nursing Certification, the plan will ensure Inwood is not left behind in the age of technology and innovation.
I could not possibly list all of ways this plan will improve the economic mobility and quality of life of Inwood residents, but I encourage you to read the full list of commitments secured from the City, here.

Hoy, el Concejo Municipal dará un paso histórico para Inwood. Durante décadas, la comunidad vio como nuevas inversiones y oportunidades cambiaban a cada rincón de esta ciudad. Y mientras que otros barrios cosecharon los beneficios de mejores trabajos, educación tecnológica, instituciones culturales de primer nivel y parques ampliados, Inwood se sintió en gran medida olvidado.
Pero sentirse olvidado no exime a una comunidad de las realidades difíciles. Inwood aún sentía las presiones de una ciudad cada vez más costosa y en crecimiento. Había que hacer algo, y aplaudo a esta Administración por trabajar con la comunidad local en los últimos tres años y dar un paso audaz para mejorar su calidad de vida y asegurar un futuro más equitativo y próspero para quienes llaman a Inwood su hogar.
Conozco al Alcalde Bill de Blasio desde hace 25 años, y sé que su compromiso con los pobres,
los marginados y las minorías es inquebrantable, algo que toca su corazón. El Concejal
Rodríguez se compromete a votar a favor y puedo decirle que esta no es una decisión fácil para
él y que sé que él toma con mucho cuidado. Y llamo a todos nuestros funcionarios electos del
norte de Manhattan a trabajar juntos para asegurarnos de que este plan funcione para lo mejor de
nuestra comunidad tal como lo ha visualizado nuestro Alcalde.

para competir en la economía del siglo XXI. Estoy muy entusiasmado con los más de $50
millones en mejoras de capital para nuestras escuelas públicas, junto con los recursos ampliados
de STEM para maestros y estudiantes. Como profesional en el campo de la medicina, sé de
primera mano cómo el acceso a puestos de trabajo en este sector puede cambiar vidas. Desde
laboratorios de ciencias actualizados hasta un nuevo Instituto STEM que preparará a nuestros
estudiantes para la universidad a un nuevo programa CTE enfocado en la Certificación de
Enfermería, el plan asegurará que Inwood no se quede atrás en la era de la tecnología y la
innovación.

El cambio no es fácil. El liderazgo no es fácil. Pero los resultados positivos como este hacen que
valga la pena la lucha, y me enorgullece tener un miembro del Consejo que fue lo
suficientemente valiente como para tomar medidas frente a las inmensas presiones. Este plan se
basa en fortalezas de Inwood para asegurar un futuro brillante y equitativo. Este es un plan que
Inwood merece.
