Festival brings cinema to children

For the sixth straight year, KidCinemaFest, a film festival geared specifically to children and their families, is back in New York City.
Designed to heighten children’s appreciation for filmmaking and cultural diversity, this year’s festival includes more than 40 films from over 20 different countries.
KidCinemaFest 2014 will be held from October 22 through October 31 at venues such as The United Palace of Cultural Arts, Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, Casita Maria in the South Bronx and uptown public schools.
The event is free of charge and open to all ages.
The films chosen this year are made for children, and reflect the strong cultural and social identities of the cities where they were created, explained Armando Guareño, Founder and Director of KidCinemaFest.
“This year’s festival differs from previous years in that we have the opportunity to show a film from every continent in the world,” remarked Guareño. “We will also be more interactive with the kids this year, as we want to know their thoughts on the films and the festival in general.”
KidCinemaFest presents feature films, documentaries, animation and short films that are suitable for children, adolescents, young adults and their families.
The festival is sponsored by Cine Art Entertainment Productions, in collaboration with Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez, Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center, and Catholic Charities.
This marks the first year that KidCinemaFest has screened films in the Bronx.
Guareño remarked, “Families can learn about different cultures without having to leave New York City.”
The festival kicks off on October 22 at Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center with a screening of Ernest and Celestine, an Academy Award nominee for Best Animated Feature, that tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a bear and a young mouse.
The festival closes on October 31 at Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center with the Dominican film Los Super. This superhero movie depicts a former Olympic champion who joins forces with a street hustler and a radio technician, with the intention of becoming inventors after a crime wave hits their neighborhood.
Other screening highlights include: Caído del mapa (Off the Map), an Argentinean comedy; Welcome to the Space Show, a Japanese animation film by Koji Masumari; La Montaña (The Mountain), a Dominican documentary; and the Venezuelan family film El Manzano Azul (The Blue Apple Tree).
Several other shorter length films will be shown as compilations, including Kid Flix Mix, a collection of short films suited for children as young as four.
“I strongly believe that the festival has been helping [local youths] to see the world from a different perspective and learning more about other children’s lifestyle from around the world,” said Guareño.
The 6th Annual KidCinemaFest Film Festival takes place from October 22 to 31, 2014 at various locations in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx.

Por sexto año consecutivo, KidCinemaFest, un festival de cine dirigido específicamente a niños y sus familias, está de vuelta en la ciudad de Nueva York.
Diseñado para aumentar el aprecio de los niños por el cine y la diversidad cultural, el festival de este año incluye más de 40 películas de 20 países diferentes.
KidCinemaFest 2014 se llevará a cabo del 22 al 31 de octubre en lugares como el United Palace de Artes Culturales, el Centro Cultural Alianza Dominicana, Casita María en el sur del Bronx y escuelas públicas del norte del condado.
El evento es gratuito y abierto a todas las edades.
Las películas seleccionadas este año están hechas para niños y reflejan las fuertes identidades culturales y sociales de las ciudades en las que fueron creadas, explicó Armando Guareño, fundador y director de KidCinemaFest.
“El festival de este año se diferencia de años anteriores en que tenemos la oportunidad de mostrar una película de cada continente en el mundo”, comentó Guareño. “También vamos a ser más interactivos con los niños este año, ya que queremos conocer qué piensan sobre las películas y el festival en general”.
KidCinemaFest presenta largometrajes, documentales, animaciones y cortometrajes que son adecuados para niños, adolescentes, adultos jóvenes y sus familias.
El festival es patrocinado por Cine Art Entertainment Productions, en colaboración con el concejal Ydanis Rodríguez, el Centro Cultural Alianza Dominicana y Caridades Católicas.
Esto marca el primer año que KidCinemaFest proyecta películas en el Bronx.
Guareño comentó: “Las familias pueden conocer diferentes culturas sin tener que salir de la ciudad de Nueva York”.
El festival comienza el 22 de octubre en el Centro Cultural Alianza Dominicana con la proyección de Ernest and Celestine, nominada al Premio de la Academia como Mejor Película Animada, que cuenta la historia de una amistad entre un oso y un ratón joven.
El festival cierra el 31 de octubre en el Centro Cultural Alianza Dominicana con la película dominicana Los Súper. Esta película de superhéroes representa a un ex campeón olímpico que une fuerzas con un estafador callejero y un técnico de radio, con la intención de convertirse en inventores después de que una ola de crímenes golpea su barrio.
Otros puntos destacados incluyen la proyección: Caído del mapa (Off the Map), una comedia argentina; Welcome to the Space Show, una película japonesa animada de Koji Masumari; La Montaña (The Mountain), un documental dominicano; y la película familiar venezolana El Manzano Azul (The Blue Apple Tree).
Otras películas cortas se mostrarán como compilaciones, incluyendo Kid Flix Mix, una colección de cortometrajes para niños desde cuatro años de edad.
“Creo firmemente que el festival les ha estado ayudando [a los jóvenes locales] a ver el mundo desde una perspectiva diferente y a aprender más sobre el estilo de vida de otros niños del mundo”, dijo Guareño.
