Falling into place at the Palace

Uptown residents have lots of reasons to cheer this fall.
The United Palace Theater of Cultural Arts (UPCA) unveiled a “crackalackin’” season of upcoming events this past Sunday. The ornate Washington Heights venue features a wide array of movies, theater, live music, fashion and culminates in a huge Christmas spectacular event.
Another surprise—the sound system is greatly enhanced.
Mike Fitelson, UPCA’s Executive Director, said that the organization’s main mission is to inspire. “We want folks in this neighborhood to walk in these doors and feel energized in this space,” he said. “We want the buzz to continue when you find your seat and see, hear and think about things you’ve never thought before.”
The season kicks off Thursday, Sept. 11th, with a Fashion Week event. Later in the month, moviegoers can see Robin Williams in one of his best serious roles in The Fisher King. October brings still more films; Guys and Dolls and the classic Frankenstein with Boris Karloff with a new score, performed live by guitarist Gary Lucas. Other holiday films include Elf and It’s a Wonderful Life, which will be introduced by Mary Owen, daughter of Donna Reed, who stars in the film with Jimmy Stewart.
Music fans of all stripes will be thrilled by the Dec. 7th event, The Hip Hop Nutcracker of Washington Heights. The event is destined to be one of UPCA’s biggest events of the season. “We really want to bring this urban feel to classical music,” said Fitelson.
The Christmas spectacular is estimated to cost about $170,000 and will fill the UPCA stage.
The story will be told in a narrative fashion with 12 hip hop dancers, live music from the uptown-based SONOS Chamber Orchestra, accompanied by an electronic violinist and a dee-jay.
“We’ve completely adapted the Nutcracker story to contemporary Washington Heights,” said Fitelson. “The main character has been re-named María Clara,” he added. “It has all of the iconic moments of The Nutcracker.”
SONOS Music Director Erik E. Ochsner echoed his enthusiasm.
“[We are] thrilled to be involved,” he said. “This collaboration will introduce our classical audience to the art form of hip-hop dance, and we look forward to introducing the hip-hop dance audience to the joys of live classical music.”
UPCA is layering in other classical music events with the Seniors Orchestral Society of New York on Oct. 26th with Xavier Eikerenkoetter (Rev. Ike’s son) as the Narrator. The New York Youth Symphony performs on Nov. 9.
The musical events echo the Harmony and el Sistema after-school music programs the UPCA hosts throughout the year.
“It’s growing out of how much growth we’ve seen in our kids and how having this exposure to classical music is really impacting the lives of these kids and these families,” Fitelson said. “We’re trying to expand that to the greater community.”
The première of the KidCinemaFest, showing the animated film, Ernest & Celestine, on Oct. 22nd is another bright spot on UPCA’s event calendar. The Academy Award-nominated film about an unlikely friendship between a mouse and a bear has an all-star cast—with the voices of Forest Whitaker, Lauren Bacall, William H. Macy, Paul Giamatti and Mackenzie Foy.
“That kind of movie you’re never going to see in Northern Manhattan. That’s why it’s so exciting to show this,” said Fitelson.
Even though the 3,400-seat venue is one of the four biggest theaters in Manhattan, it still creates an intimate theater experience with the People’s Theatre Project (PTP). On Nov. 21-22, the company presents another round of Uptown Action, a participatory theater event devoted to social justice.
As Mino Lora, PTP’s Co-Executive and Program Director, sees it, the ongoing collaboration with UPCA is a natural fit.
“One value [we share] is arts accessibility,” explained Lora. “We look forward to having our community actors from Uptown Action premiere their fall show, based on their real-life experiences, this upcoming November.”
Another added bonus to the season of theater, music and movies includes an improved sound system. A member of the UPCA’s production team discovered 14 large speakers in a storage space at the Palace.
The speakers had been dormant since Rev. Ike’s time. Now, they have all been refurbished and newly hung around the theatre.
Over the past few years, the Palace has been undergoing renovations. It recently obtained a new projector and a new 52-foot screen. During the next month, speakers will also be hung in the balcony to further improve the theater’s sound.
“It’s not the final step, but it’s getting us farther along,” said Fitelson. “That will further our commitment to being a world class theater.”

El Teatro de Artes Culturales United Palace (UPCA por sus siglas en inglés), dio a conocer una temporada “crackalackin” de eventos próximos el pasado domingo. El decorado lugar de Washington Heights cuenta con una amplia gama de eventos de película, teatro, música en vivo, moda y culmina con uno enorme y espectacular de Navidad.
Otra sorpresa: el sistema de sonido mejoró enormemente.
Mike Fitelson, director ejecutivo de UPCA, dijo que la misión principal de la organización es inspirar. “Queremos que la gente en este barrio entre por esas puertas y se sienta con energía en este espacio”, dijo. “Queremos que la emoción continúe cuando usted encuentre su asiento y vea, escuche y piense en cosas que nunca ha pensado antes”.
La temporada inicia el jueves 11 de septiembre con un evento de la Semana de la Moda. Más adelante en el mes, los amantes de las películas pueden ver a Robin Williams en uno de sus mejores papeles serios en The Fisher King. “Es el tipo de película que nunca se verá en el norte de Manhattan. Es por eso que es tan emocionante mostrarla”, dijo Fitelson.
A pesar de que el lugar -3,400 asientos- es uno de los cuatro teatros más grandes de Manhattan, aun así crea una experiencia íntima de cine con el Proyecto Teatro del Pueblo (PTP por sus siglas en inglés). Del 21 al 22 noviembre, la compañía presenta una nueva ronda de Uptown Action, un evento de teatro participativo dedicado a la justicia social.
Como lo ve Mino Lora, codirector ejecutivo y director de programa de PTP, la colaboración en curso con UPCA es un paso natural.
“Uno de los valores [que compartimos] es la accesibilidad de las artes”, explicó Lora. “Esperamos que nuestros actores comunitarios de Uptown Action estrenen su espectáculo de otoño, basado en sus experiencias de la vida real, este próximo mes de noviembre”.
Otra ventaja añadida a la temporada de teatro, música y películas, incluye un sistema de sonido mejorado. Un miembro del equipo de producción de UPCA descubrió 14 grandes altavoces en un espacio de almacenamiento en el Palace.
Los altavoces habían estado inactivos desde los tiempos del reverendo Ike. Ahora, todas han sido renovadas y recién colgadas alrededor del teatro.
En los últimos años, el Palace ha pasado por renovaciones. Recientemente obtuvo un nuevo proyector y una nueva pantalla de 52 pies. Durante el próximo mes, los altavoces serán colgados en el balcón para mejorar aún más el sonido del teatro.
“No es el paso final, pero nos está llevando más lejos”, dijo Fitelson. “Eso va a impulsar nuestro compromiso de ser un teatro de clase mundial”.
