NYRR Open Run

Get moving with the New York Road Runners (NYRR) at Inwood Hill Park on Sat., Apr. 9^th at 8:45 a.m. Enjoy a fast-paced run or a leisurely walk. The open runs welcome participants of all ages, and volunteers are needed as well. Meet at the entrance of Inwood Hill Park, located at the corner of Isham Street and Seaman Avenue.

Annual Shearing of the Heather

Bring your musical instruments and join in the community parade through the Heather Garden in Fort Tryon Park on Sat., Apr. 9^th at 10:30 a.m. The three-acre Heather Garden is the site of the annual rite of spring – the Shearing of the Heather by members of the Northeast Heather Society and Heather Garden staff. ‎

Learn why Fort Tryon Park has the largest heath and heather collection in the northeast, and learn how to propagate your own heathers with clippings from the shearing. Participate in a historical scavenger hunt, make flower-themed crafts, and get your face painted while enjoying the garden’s spring beauty and panoramic views of the Hudson River and Palisades. Heather Garden is located in Fort Tryon Park at Cabrini Boulevard and Fort Washington Avenue.

Black-Out Poetry Session

Visit Morris-Jumel Mansion on Sat., Apr. 9^th at 11 a.m. for a Black-Out Poetry Session. Using the works of early and mid-19th century authors that Madame Jumel may have read, participants will use black-out techniques to create a new work of art and poetry. Black-out poetry involves selecting words from a printed page of a book to create a new poem, all the other words on the page are blacked out. The methods and designs of the process can range from simple to the elaborate. Recommended for children ages 6 and above, and led by local artist Trish Mayo, the workshop will teach participants how to create a black-out design around words chosen as their poem. Participants will create a work of art to take home.

Teen Open Mic

Calling all teen poets, vocalists, comics and storytellers. Head uptown for Open Mic Night at the Schomburg Center on Fri., Apr. 15^th at 6 p.m. Hosted by the Schomburg Junior Scholars, young people ages 13-18 are invited to this open mic event. Come set it off with a special evening of spoken word poetry, music, and more. The Schomburg Center is located at 515 Malcolm X Boulevard.

Carrera abierta de NYRR

Muévase con los New York Road Runners (NYRR) en Inwood Hill Park el sábado 9 de abril a las 8:45 am. Disfrute de una carrera de ritmo rápido o de una agradable caminata. Esquila anual del Heather

Traiga sus instrumentos musicales y participe en el desfile comunitario del jardín Heather en Fort Tryon Park el sábado 9 de abril a las 10:30 am. Sesión de poesía black-out

Visite la Mansión Morris-Jumel el sábado 9 de abril a las 11 am para una sesión de poesía black-out. Usando obras de autores de principios y mediados del siglo XIX, que la señora Jumel puede haber leído, los participantes utilizarán técnicas black-out para crear una nueva obra de arte y poesía. Micrófono abierto adolescente

Llamando a todos los poetas, vocalistas, cómicos y narradores adolescentes. Reúnan a sus amigos y diríjanse al norte del condado para la Noche de Micrófono Abierto en el Centro Schomburg el viernes 15 de abril a las 6 pm, organizado por los estudiosos junior de Schomburg, los jóvenes de entre 13-18 años están invitados a este evento de micrófono abierto.
