Marking Time

How have black women specifically used art and performance to express the massive toll that prisons have had on their lives, families, and communities? On Sat., Mar. 21^st at 7:00 p.m., Harlem Stage presents an evening of performances and readings by three formerly incarcerated women: Mary Baxter, Asia Johnson, and Michelle Jones. As part of Women’s History Month, the presentation will delve into the impact of incarceration on the lives of black women and the creative strategies they use to resist the dehumanization, confinement, and stigma of policing and prisons. A conversation with the three women will follow and will be moderated by Dr. Nicole R. Fleetwood, who will celebrate the release of her new book, Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration. Poetry for Service Workshop

The Dream Center presents the Poetry for Service Workshop, a social justice and spoken word poetry experience where participants foster community, have reflective discussion, and learn the craft of spoken word as a means of self-expression and a tool for restoration. Participants will create and share original spoken word pieces and present a collection of their work by the end of each session. This interactive workshop begins on Wed., Mar. 19^th. The Dream Center is located at 205 West 119th Street.

Arturo O ‘Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Arturo O’Farrill and the Latin Jazz Orchestra will perform in the Miller Theatre on Sat., Apr. 4th at 8:00 p.m. The performance will feature the world premiere of Mundoagua, a new commission from the School of the Arts in honor of Columbia’s Year of Water. The Grammy Award-winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, led by Arturo O’Farrill, brings together big band jazz with Latin music for a creative fusion of two giant pillars of modern music. This performance will take place at the Miller Theatre, Columbia University located at 2960 Broadway.

From Mansion to Museum

On Tues., Mar. 17^th, the Morris-Jumel Mansion will present the exhibition “From Mansion to Museum.” Constructed in 1765, the Mansion has witnessed 255 years of American history. The museum has been in operation for 116 years and during this time, the presentation of the site, grounds, former residents, and historical context has continued to evolve. “From Mansion to Museum” explores a little-known fifteen-year period in the house’s history: the transformation from private residence to museum. Drawing from materials from the museum’s archives and the Library of Congress, this exhibition presents images from the Earle Family’s occupation (1894-1903) and the evolution to a museum dedicated to George Washington and the American Revolution.

Marking Time

¿Cómo han utilizado específicamente las mujeres negras el arte y la representación para expresar el costo masivo que las prisiones han tenido en sus vidas, familias y comunidades? El sábado 21 de marzo a las 7:00 p.m., Harlem Stage contará con una velada de actuaciones y lecturas de tres mujeres anteriormente encarceladas: Mary Baxter, Asia Johnson y Michelle Jones. Como parte del Mes de la Historia de la Mujer, la presentación profundizará en el impacto del encarcelamiento en la vida de las mujeres negras y las estrategias creativas que utilizan para resistir la deshumanización, el confinamiento y el estigma de la vigilancia policial y las cárceles. Seguirá una conversación con las tres mujeres, moderada por la Dra. Nicole R. Fleetwood, quien celebrará el lanzamiento de su nuevo libro, Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration. Taller Poetry for Service

Arturo O ‘Farrill y la Orquesta de jazz afro latino

Arturo O’Farrill y la Orquesta de jazz afro latino se presentarán en el Teatro Miller el sábado 4 de abril a las 8:00 p.m. El espectáculo presentará la premier mundial de Mundoagua, una nueva comisión de la Escuela de las Artes en honor al Año del Agua de Columbia. La Orquesta de jazz afro latino, ganadora de un premio Grammy, dirigida por Arturo O’Farrill, une al jazz de las big band con música latina para una fusión creativa de dos enormes pilares de la música moderna. Esta actuación tendrá lugar en el Teatro Miller, Universidad Columbia, ubicado en el No. 2960 de Broadway.

El martes 17 de marzo, la mansión Morris-Jumel presentará la exposición “De Mansión a Museo”. Construida en 1765, la mansión ha sido testigo de 255 años de historia estadounidense. El museo ha estado en funcionamiento durante 116 años y durante este tiempo, la presentación del sitio, los terrenos, los antiguos residentes y el contexto histórico ha seguido evolucionando. “De Mansión a Museo” explora un período de quince años poco conocido en la historia de la casa: la transformación de residencia privada a museo. A partir de materiales de los archivos del museo y de la Biblioteca del Congreso, esta exposición presenta imágenes de la ocupación de la familia Earle (1894-1903) y la evolución a un museo dedicado a George Washington y la Revolución Americana. La mansión Morris-Jumel está ubicada en el No. 65 de Jumel Terrace.
