Color for a community canvas

Despite chilly temperatures in the past few weeks, things at the Dyckman Cornerstone Community Center have been downright tropical.
Volunteers and workers from Habitat for Humanity have been on hand for the past three weeks to provide the Center with a complete makeover, despite the weather’s best efforts to keep them away.
Just two Fridays ago, the painters’ path to the center had to be carved out of the heaps of snow that had been sent by the Polar Vortex.
The Cornerstone Community Center serves the 2,580 residents of the Dyckman Houses, and has provided a place for community activities where adults and children can learn and play, offering after school programs and workshops, including anti-bullying workshops, computer classes and arts and crafts. The site had been run by Alianza Dominicana, and now it is being run by the Alianza Dominicana/Division of Catholic Charities Community Services. New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Operations slated the site for a makeover by Habitat for Humanity.
“Everyone is very happy with the changes,” explained Pedro Mejía, the Center’s Program Director. “The colors; they’re very bright. It’ll give it a better outlook and it’s way more attractive.”
Freshly painted Keith Haring-inspired characters appear on the walls of the center’s lounge, and the hallways are a riot of warm colors as patterns dance their way across the drywall canvas.
Brittany Jones, a Project Manager for Habitat for Humanity, said the design was inspired by the colors that had been selected by the teenagers and the Youth Council that utilize the Community Center.
Mejía was glad the youth had had a say in the changes.
“Since (the color scheme) was picked by our young people, it’s something they have ownership of,” he said.
“The colors they picked out all had a Caribbean vibe to them, so we came up with a design to go with it,” added Jones.
The Keith Haring figures were inspired by stickers that had already been placed on the wall of the lounge.
“We see what rooms are used for, we see the design in the center and we go from there,” explained Jones.
One room now has musical notes gliding across it and the kitchen has warm orange-hued walls.
This past Thurs., Jan. 9th, Howard Chwekun, a volunteer, was still busy touching up the walls, erasing stray streaks of paint.
Chwekun, who is retired, has been volunteering for Habitat for Humanity for a year and is the veteran of many paint jobs, like the one he did at the community center of the Corsi Houses in East Harlem.
The work, he explained, was immensely rewarding.
“I remember the kids walked in and they were ecstatic.”
It’s moments like those that Chwekun likes to help create.
Dani Hupper is a first-time volunteer at Habitat for Humanity. A student at Whitman College, she was looking for something to do with her time while she was on winter break.
“You never know what spot you’ll be in in the future,” she said. “Right now, I’m not living too bad a life, but who’s to say I won’t be needing volunteers later?”
And there’s another draw.
“It’s just the energy that volunteers have that you don’t get elsewhere,” said Hupper.

Color para un lienzo comunal

A pesar de las frías temperaturas de las últimas semanas, las cosas en el Centro Comunal Dyckman Cornerstone son tropicales.
Voluntarios y empleados de Hábitat para la Humanidad han estado disponibles por las pasadas tres semanas para proveerle al Centro una renovación completa, a pesar de los esfuerzos del clima para mantenerlos alejados.
Hace dos viernes, el camino de los pintores hacia el centro se esculpió a través de la mucha nieve que había sido enviada por el ‘Polar Vortex’.
El Centro Comunal Cornerstone sirve a los 2,580 residentes de Dyckman Houses, y ha provisto un lugar para actividades comunales donde los adultos y los niños pueden aprender y jugar, ofreciendo programas luego del horario escolar y talleres, incluyendo talleres contra la intimidación, clases de computadora y manualidades. El lugar ha sido dirigido por Alianza Dominicana, y ahora está siendo dirigido por Alianza Dominicana/División de Caridades Católicas Servicios de la Comunidad. Operaciones de la Autoridad de Vivienda de la ciudad de Nueva York (NYCHA, por sus siglas en inglés) programó el lugar para una renovación por Hábitat para la Humanidad.
“Todo el mundo está bien contento con los cambios”, explicó Pedro Mejía, Director del Programa del Centro. “Los colores; son bien brillantes. Le dará una mejor perspectiva y son mucho más atractivos”.
Recién pintada, los personajes de Keith Haring aparecen en las paredes del salón del centro, y los pasillos son un derroche de colores cálidos según los patrones danzan su camino a través de la pared.
Brittany Jones, Gerente de Proyecto de Hábitat para la Humanidad, dijo que el diseño fue inspirado por los colores que habían sido seleccionados por los adolescentes y el Concejo de Jóvenes que utiliza el Centro Comunal.
Mejía estaba contento de que los jóvenes hubieran participado en los cambios.
“Ya que los colores fueron escogidos por nuestra gente joven, es algo de lo que tienen propiedad”, dijo.
“Los colores que escogieron todos tienen un ambiente caribeño, así es que salimos con un diseño que va con ello”, añadió Jones.
Las figuras de Keith Haring fueron inspiradas por pegatinas que ya habían sido colocadas en la pared del salón.
“Vemos para que son utilizados los salones, vemos el diseño en el centro y de ahí partimos”, explicó Jones.
Ahora un salón tiene notas musicales deslizándose a través de el y la cocina tiene cálidos tonos naranjas.
El pasado jueves, 9 de enero, Howard Chwekun, voluntario, todavía estaba ocupado retocando paredes, borrando rayas de pintura.
Chwekun, quien está retirado, ha sido voluntario de Hábitat para la Humanidad por un año y es el veterano de muchos trabajos de pintura, como el que hizo en el centro comunal Corsi Houses en Harlem.
El trabajo, explicó, fue inmensamente gratificante.
“Recuerdo los niños entrando y estaban estáticos”.
Son momentos como esos que Chwekun le gusta ayudar a crear.
Dani Hupper es voluntaria por primera vez en Hábitat para la Humanidad. Estudiante del Colegio Whitman, estaba buscando algo que hacer con su tiempo mientras estaba de vacaciones de invierno.
“Nunca sabes en que lugar vas a estar en el futuro”, dijo. “Ahora, no vivo una vida muy mala, pero ¿quien dice que no voy a necesitar voluntarios más tarde?
Y hay otro asunto.
“Es la energía que los voluntarios tienen que no consigues en ningún otro lado”, dijo Hupper.
