Care, in good company

Tanya Pichardo has been losing – and she likes it.
“I started Zumba in February,” explained Pichardo. “I have lost 25 pounds.”
She credited her allegiance to the fitness classes at Trinity Church; the program is part of a wellness initiative presented by healthcare provider EmblemHealth and the Inwood Community Services (ICS).
“I’m grateful EmblemHealth brought a much needed program to our community,” added Pichardo.
But she did have one problem.
“If I wasn’t here today, I would be doing Zumba,” she joked.
Pichardo was joined by fellow community members and leaders at La Marina this past Tues., Oct. 21st for the “Commitment to Care Lecture and Awards Series,” which recognized the work of seven nonprofit Northern Manhattan organizations.
“We would like to recognize [those] who are caring for people,” said David Flemister, EmblemHealth’s Director of Brand Strategy and Community Marketing. “Tonight, we are honoring organizations that are instrumental in making sure this community is thriving.”
CUNY in the Heights Executive Director Seny Taveras was keynote speaker.Each of the seven groups selected provide free or low-cost programs. They were: Asociación de Mujeres Progresistas, Inc. (AMP), Community League of the Heights, Inc. (CLOTH), Instituto Duartiano, Inwood Community Services, Inc. (ICS), Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC), Padres Abogando por los Niños Foundation, and the United Palace of Cultural Arts, Inc. (UPCA).
“It is an honor to celebrate the work these organizations do,” added Dave Mahder, EmblemHealth’s Vice President of Marketing and Communications.
The honorees were not unknown to EmblemHealth, which has dedicated funding and resources in the past years to support their programming.
“We want to focus first and foremost in keeping our neighborhoods healthy,” said Flemister. “We want to be a resource for them.”
The organization’s focus on wellness was shared by AMP.
“We focus on family health,” explained AMP President Carmen G. Acosta. In over two decades of work, AMP has offered workshops that focus on healthy nutritional habits, physical education and spiritual and mental health for families.
“We want families to engage in positive and healthy activities,” said Acosta. “We feel deep love for uptown Manhattan and want to enrich the lives of our families.”
CUNY in the Heights Executive Director Seny Taveras, JD served as keynote speaker. Taveras advised against relying on singular sources of funding, and to explore new opportunities– and she cited the evening’s host as an exception to the rule.
“It is very rare that companies recognize the work of nonprofits,” she said. “Often companies come to take from us, but don’t give back. EmblemHealth is different.”
Honorees agreed that their work had been enhanced by the organization’s support.
“If we had more partners like EmblemHealth, we would do a lot more work and help a lot more people,” noted Yvonne Stennett, CLOTH’s Executive Director.
“It really takes a community and multiple partners,” to maintain a nonprofit organization operational, agreed NMIC Interim Executive Director María Lizardo. “EmblemHealth is really committed to care.”
For César Romero, the resources offered were a lifeline.
“We don’t receive funding from the city or from private corporations,” said Romero, President of Instituto Duartiano. “For the past two years, they have been our main supporters.”
“As a nonprofit, we live with the uncertainty of funding, so we are very happy when funding comes our way,” added Cynthia Andreozzi, Director of Adult Literacy Programs at ICS. She reported that the healthcare organization’s support had been critical.
“Through [their], we were able to expand our services.”
Mike Fitelson, Executive Director of UPCA, said he was flattered by the company he kept. “I am honored,” he said. “Our inspiration comes from this community.”
Madher agreed that the community offered abundant reason for enthusiasm.
“Upper Manhattan is a very special place,” he said.

Cesar Romero, President accepted the Commitment to Care Award for the Development of Social, Cultural Programming and Adult Literacy.
Inwood Community Services, Inc.
Cyn Andreozzi, Director, Adult Literacy Programs accepted the Commitment to Care Award for Providing Essential Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, Adult Literacy and Youth Enrichment Programs.
Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation
María Lizardo, Interim Executive Director, accepted the Commitment to Care Award for Stabilizing Families and Promoting Economic Self-Sufficiency.
Padres Abogando Por Los Niños Fundación
Carmen Rojas, President, accepted the Commitment to Care Award for Promoting Education and Creating an Environment Where Children Can Thrive.
United Palace of Cultural Arts, Inc.
Mike Fitelson, Executive Director, accepted the Commitment to Care Award for Inspiring People to Exceed through Arts and Culture.
Cuidado en buena compañía

Tanya Pichardo ha estado perdiendo, y le gusta.
“Empecé con las clases de zumba en febrero”, explicó Pichardo. “He perdido 25 libras”.
Ella atribuye su lealtad a las clases de acondicionamiento físico en la iglesia de la Trinidad; el programa es parte de una iniciativa de bienestar presentada por el proveedor de atención médica EmblemHealth y Servicios Comunitarios de Inwood (ICS por sus siglas en inglés).
“Estoy agradecida de que EmblemHealth trajera un programa tan necesario para nuestra comunidad”, agregó Pichardo.
Pero sí tenía un problema.
“Si no estuviera hoy aquí, estaría haciendo zumba”, bromeó.
Pichardo estuvo acompañada por miembros y líderes de la comunidad en La Marina, el pasado martes 21 de octubre para la entrega de “Premios y Conferencia Compromiso con el Cuidado”, que reconoce la labor de siete organizaciones sin fines de lucro del norte de Manhattan.
“Nos gustaría reconocer a quienes están cuidando a la gente”, dijo David Flemister, director de Estrategia de Marca y Mercadeo Comunitario de EmblemHealth. “Esta noche estamos honrando a las organizaciones que son instrumentales para asegurar que esta comunidad prospere”.
Cada uno de los siete grupos seleccionados ofrece programas gratuitos o de bajo costo. Los elegidos fueron: Asociación de Mujeres Progresistas, Inc. (AMP); Community League of the Heights, Inc. (CLOTH); el Instituto Duartiano; Inwood Community Services, Inc. (ICS); la Corporación de Mejoramiento del norte de Manhattan (NMIC por sus siglas en inglés); la fundación Padres Abogando Por los Niños; y United Palace of Cultural Arts, Inc. (UPCA).
“Es un honor celebrar la labor que estas organizaciones realizan”, añadió David Mahder, vicepresidente de Mercadeo y Comunicaciones de EmblemHealth.
Los homenajeados no eran desconocidos para EmblemHealth, pues la organización ha dedicado financiamiento y recursos en los últimos años para apoyar sus programas.
“Queremos concentrarnos en primer lugar en mantener nuestros vecindarios saludables”, dijo Flemister. “Queremos ser un recurso para ellos”.
El enfoque de la organización en el bienestar fue compartido por AMP.
“Nos enfocamos en la salud familiar”, explicó la presidenta de AMP, Carmen G. Acosta. En más de dos décadas de trabajo, AMP ha ofrecido talleres que se centran en hábitos nutricionales saludables, educación física y salud espiritual y mental para las familias.
“Queremos que las familias se involucren en actividades positivas y saludables”, señaló Acosta. “Sentimos un profundo amor por el norte de Manhattan y queremos enriquecer las vidas de nuestras familias”.
La directora ejecutiva de CUNY en the Heights, Seny Taveras, JD, fue la oradora principal. Taveras recomendó no depender de fuentes únicas de financiamiento y explorar nuevas oportunidades, y citó al anfitrión de la noche como una excepción a la regla.
“Es muy raro que las empresas reconozcan la labor de las organizaciones no lucrativas”, señaló. “A menudo pueden tomar algo de nosotros, pero no lo retribuyen. EmblemHealth es diferente”.
Los homenajeados estuvieron de acuerdo en que su labor ha sido reforzada por el apoyo de la organización.
“Si tuviéramos más socios como EmblemHealth haríamos muchas más cosas y ayudaríamos a mucha más gente”, señaló Yvonne Stennett, directora ejecutiva de CLOTH.
“Realmente se necesita una comunidad y varios socios para mantener una organización sin fines de lucro funcionando”, señaló la directora ejecutiva interina de NMIC, María Lizardo. “EmblemHealth tiene un compromiso verdadero con la atención y el cuidado”.
Para César Romero, los recursos ofrecidos fueron un salvavidas. “No recibimos fondos de la ciudad o de empresas privadas”, comentó Romero, quien es presidente del Instituto Duartiano. “Durante los últimos dos años han sido nuestros principales partidarios”.
“Como organización no lucrativa, vivimos con la incertidumbre de los recursos, por lo que estamos muy contentos cuando el financiamiento llega”, agregó Cynthia Andreozzi, directora de programas de alfabetización de adultos en ICS. Informó que el apoyo de la organización del cuidado de la salud ha sido crítico.
“A través suyo hemos sido capaces de ampliar nuestros servicios”.
Mike Fitelson, director ejecutivo de UPCA, dijo que se siente halagado por la empresa que mantiene. “Es un honor”, dijo. “Nuestra inspiración viene de esta comunidad”.
Madher estuvo de acuerdo en que la comunidad ofrece abundantes razones para el entusiasmo.
“El Alto Manhattan es un lugar muy especial”, dijo.
