You’ve got a friend in him.

Shah Ally was recently elected as the new chairperson for Community Board 12, which represents Inwood and Washington Heights – and he’s looking to live up to his surname.

Chief among his objectives is to engage more local residents and generate awareness of the board’s residents.

The 39-year-old Ally assumed the role on December 23rd from George Fernández Jr., who reached his term limit as Chair. Fernández was named treasurer during CB12’s recent elections.

Ally, a Washington Heights resident, runs his own family law practice and is an Adjunct Professor at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus.

He also serves as Chairperson of the Community Association of Progressive Dominicans (ACDP).

Ally said his experience as a trial lawyer and teacher will help him to assist CB12 in functioning more efficiently, he said.

“I know how to talk to people,” Ally remarked.

Ally said he plans to implement a series of “Coffee with the Community Board” events at local cafes and restaurants, where local residents can chat informally with CB12 members.

“I want to know about the issues that matter most to people,” said Ally.

“For the board to be successful, we need to be bigger than just us,” he stated.

The board has recently done well in attracting new blood. Of the 47 members of the CB12, close to half of them of joined the board within the past 18 months, Ally said.

He explained that transparency with the community is essential to connecting with local residents.

“There is a certain level of integrity that is required of a community board,” Ally said. “By being open with all residents, they’ll know that integrity is there and that the board has their best interests at heart.”

A native of Guyana, Ally moved to the United States at age three and became a citizen at 19. He grew up in the Bronx with his mother and 6 siblings (his father passed away when he was a teenager).

Ally has lived in either Inwood or Washington Heights for nearly a decade, and is married to

Alicea Elloras, a family court judge. His son Ryan, a third grader, served as his father’s campaign manager.

Previously the head of CB12’s public safety committee and licensing committees, Ally dealt closely with issues concerning crime in local parks and the proliferation of restaurants and bars on the Dyckman Street corridor.

He said that quality of life concerns posed by the increase in Inwood nightlife will continue to be a focus for CB12 in the near future.

“But with that comes opportunity, to work with businesses to become better neighbors, and to stay aware of quality of life issues for residents,” Shah explained.
