A YUM Making a Difference

When the New York City’s Human Resources Administration (HRA) launched a teen pregnancy prevention campaign, they never expected to meet their public relations match within the same group they arguably stigmatized: a teen mom.
We had the chance to talk with Gloria Malone, teen advocate from the Bronx, who has been leading a battle against the ads with appearances on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor” and New York 1, and has also made her case in The New York Times.
She’s also launching a conference to better support teen families.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. What got you into doing this type of work?
My name is Gloria Malone. I’m 23 years old, and live in the Bronx. I’m a freelance writer, blogger, student, and a teen/young family advocate. I publish often on my personal blog, Teen Mom NYC. I got pregnant and had my daughter at 15 years old. While I wasn’t the only pregnant teen at school, I felt very isolated and disrespected by society as a whole. Here I was—young, pregnant, scared, and wanting to continue my goals in life. Yet, society had shut me out and told me life was over, just because I was a pregnant teen. Today, I hope to be the voice of help and encouragement I needed so badly at that time. I want all pregnant and parenting teens to know their lives are not over.
Tell us about the NYC Teenage Families Event taking place at the Condé Nast Building.
The No Stigma No Shame-Empowering and Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Teen Families event is going to be held on Sat., July 13th from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at Four Times Square. It seeks to connect pregnant and parenting teens with the free resources, communities, and support available to them in the city. We are going to have free daycare, raffle prizes, and food for all who attend. We’re also very excited to have former teen mom and Bronx Councilmember, Annabel Palma, delivering the keynote address. The event is a response to the horrible anti-teenage pregnancy ads released by Mayor Bloomberg and New York City’s Human Resources Administration. Again, I had my daughter at the age of 15, and found the ads highly disrespectful and malicious. To me, they demonstrated how the city had no idea what teenagers or pregnant and parenting teens needed, which is respect, information, and empowerment.
What’s your hope for this event?
My hope is to really connect these teen and young adults with a community of support, encouragement, and empowerment! I want them all to leave feeling inspired, proud, and aware of their potential. Most importantly, I want them to enjoy themselves.
What’s in the works for the future?
After the event, I hope to have monthly meet-ups with the attendees and continue to inspire and help one another. I also want to expand the work I’m doing with organizations that currently work with pregnant and parenting teens, and help them better reach and serve this young community. I already started planning next year’s event, and it’s going to be BIG.

Cuando la Administración de Recursos Humanos de la ciudad de Nueva York (HRA, por sus siglas en inglés) lanzó una campaña de prevención de embarazos en la adolescencia, nunca esperaron encontrar su pareja dentro del mismo grupo que posiblemente estigmatizaban – un padre adolescente.
Tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con Gloria Malone, defensora adolescente del Bronx, quien ha estado encabezando una batalla contra los anuncios con apariciones en ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ y New York 1, y más recientemente, se encontraba defendiendo su posicion en The New York Times. También está lanzando una conferencia para apoyar mejor a las familias adolescentes.
¿Qué te llevó a hacer este tipo de trabajo?
Mi nombre es Gloria Malone. Tengo 23 años y vivo en el Bronx. Soy una escritora, ‘blogger’, estudiante y defensora de familias de adolescentes jóvenes. A menudo publico en mi ‘blog ’personal, ‘Teen Mom NYC.’ Yo me embaracé y tuve a mi hija a los 15 años, y aunque no era la única embarazada en la escuela, me sentí bien aislada e irrespetada por la sociedad. Aquí estaba – joven, embarazada, asustada y deseando continuar mis metas en la vida. Sin embargo la sociedad me había apartado y me dijo que mi vida se había acabado, solo porque era una joven embarazada. Hoy, espero ser la voz de ayuda y fortaleza que se necesita tanto en ese momento. Yo quiero que todas las adolescentes embarazadas sepan que sus vidas no se han acabado.

El evento ‘No Stigma No Shame-Empowering and Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Teen Families’ será celebrado el sábado, 13 de julio de 11 a.m. a 4 p.m. en Four Times Square. Busca conectar a las adolescentes embarazadas y los padres adolescentes con recursos gratuitos, comunidades y apoyo disponible para ellos en la ciudad. Vamos a tener cuidado infantil gratuito, sorteos y comida para todos aquellos que asistan. También estamos bien emocionados de tener a la antigua madre adolescente y concejal del Bronx, Annabel Palma, como oradora. El evento es una respuesta a los horribles anuncios lanzados anti-embarazo en adolescentes por parte de la Administración de Recursos Humanos de la ciudad de Nueva York del alcalde Bloomberg. Yo tuve a mi hija a la edad de 15, y encuentro los anuncios altamente irrespetuosos, maliciosos y – realmente – para mi me demuestran como la ciudad no tiene ni idea de que necesitan los adolescentes o embarazadas, y los padres adolescentes, lo cual es respeto, información y empoderamiento.
¿Qué esperas de este evento?
Mi esperanza es realmente conectar a estos adolescentes y jóvenes adultos con una comunidad de apoyo, aliento y empoderamiento. Deseo que todos se vayan sintiéndose inspirados, orgullosos y conscientes de su potencial. Más importante, deseo que disfruten.
Que hay de trabajo en el futuro?
Luego del evento, espero tener reuniones mensuales con los asistentes y continuar inspirando y ayudando a otros. También deseo expandir el trabajo que estoy haciendo con organizaciones que actualmente trabajan con adolescentes embarazadas y con padres adolescentes, y ayudarlos a llegar mejor y servir esta joven comunidad. Ya comencé a planear el evento del próximo año – y va a ser GRANDE.
