It’s read all over. April 23rd is World Book Day, marked throughout the world in different ways. In Catalonia, Spain, it is known as Saint George Day (Sant Jordi, in Catalan) and residents exchange books and red roses. According to medieval legend, St. Jordi, or St. George, was a knight who slew a dragon that was ravaging a village, and saved the daughter of the king. From the drops of the dragon’s blood that spilled to the ground a rose bush sprang up. The story became a lovers’ holiday (similar to Valentine’s Day) in Catalonia, and in 1926 the Catalan booksellers’ association added books into the mix. Ever since, on St. Jordi’s Day, lovers exchange roses and books in celebration of the legend. Bookstalls and flower stands spring up all over Barcelona and the cities and towns of Catalonia, in a celebration of love and reading. For the first time, the tradition will travel to Northern Manhattan on Sat., Apr. 22nd. En Cataluña, España, se conoce como el Día de San Jorge (Sant Jordi, en catalán) y los residentes intercambian libros y rosas rojas. Según la leyenda medieval, San Jordi, o San Jorge, fue un caballero que mató a un dragón que estaba devastando un pueblo y salvó a la hija del rey. De las gotas de la sangre del dragón que derramó al suelo surgió un rosal. La historia se convirtió en una fiesta de los amantes (similar al Día de San Valentín) en Cataluña, y en 1926 la asociación de vendedores catalanes de libros agregó libros a la mezcla. Desde entonces, en el Día de San Jordi, los amantes intercambian rosas y libros en celebración de la leyenda. Puestos de libros y de flores brotan por toda Barcelona y las ciudades y pueblos de Cataluña, en una celebración del amor y la lectura.
