A new center of care stakes its claim
EmblemHealth comes to northern Manhattan

There is something happening here.
This past week, passerby along West 125th Street might have noticed something new along the famed avenue.
The bright and friendly interior beckons to passerby.
Walk in from the cold, and you will be offered hot coffee or tea. Hungry? You will be offered fresh fruit, or almonds, or a granola bar.
Once you’ve made yourself comfortable on one of the large, cushy armchairs, you can gaze upon the original works of art, or, if you’re feeling a bit more active, take to playing Xbox Kinect Wii.
Is it a café? A public recreation room? A gallery?
Not quite. More like a little bit of all, and then some.
The site at 215 West 125th Street is the new EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care Center, open this past Thurs., Jan. 24th to all visitors.
Ben Scaccia, the Director of EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care Operations, explained that the goals are threefold: to offer impeccable service; to help members navigate the tricky waters of health care; and to offer a sense of community integration.
“People are intrigued by it,” smiled Scaccia. “It’s a place like nothing they’ve seen before. We want to create a place where people feel really comfortable.”
EmblemHealth is the largest New York-based health insurer, and the Center’s opening on West 125th Street is one of two such sites in the city.
The second is located in the Cambria Heights section of Queens.
“EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care will help our members get the most from their health care. By understanding their lives, linking them to resources and simplifying processes, we will help remove the barriers that prevent them from staying healthy, living well and living better,” said William Lamoreaux, Senior Vice President, Government Programs, in a statement. “We are committed to using our local knowledge and resources to make health care work better for both our members and the entire community.”
There is something for everyone in this space of 5,000 square feet—a children’s center with games, an educational library, interactive digital screens, private conference rooms, and even a community room.
“We’re trying to look at a person holistically,” explained Christa Hill, the center’s Community Liaison.
The idea, she explains, is to help the neighborhood one person at a time.
To this end, Hill is also hoping to soon partner with local civic groups, who might avail themselves of the community space.
“Through our efforts we hope to make the community, as a whole, healthier,” said Hill.
This healthy haven is not just for those with EmblemHealth insurance.
Local residents not affiliated with the carrier are welcome to stop in and take advantage of the resources as well.
The new site, for example, will host numerous health-centered classes.
Since its official grand opening, the center has already had two classes: Medicare 101 and a Holiday Blues class.
“We’re looking to understand what the community needs,” said Hill.
While the full range of classes has not yet been decided, they will be determined by the needs of the community, she said.
Potential offerings to come include Care for the Family Care Giver, physical activity sessions and a stress management class.
Hill also selected artwork for the space, all of it by local artists, adding an immediate connection to the space of a national health care provider.
And Hill and Scaccia readily admit there is more at play than good interior design, games, and free coffee.
At no cost to those who are members, the space is intended to be an integrated service provider, a one-stop.
Members will be able to come here to resolve billing issues, find in-network treatment offers, get assistance in enrolling for government benefits, find health and wellness programs in a setting that feels like one’s own living room.
“There’s a lot of confusion and need,” said Scaccia. “Documents [can be] challenging to unlock.”
“We want to kick away as many barriers to health and happiness,” he added. “We really mean it.”

Algo está sucediendo.

Entre del frío, y se le ofrecerá café o té caliente. Hambriento? Se le ofrecerá fruta fresca, o almendras, o una barra de granola.
Una vez se haya usted acomodado en una de las grandes y acolchadas butacas, puede usted contemplar las obras de arte original, o si se siente un poquito más activo, puede jugar Xbox Kinext Wii.
Es esto un café? Un salón de recreo público? Una galería?
No precisamente. Es un poquito de cada uno, y un poco más.
El lugar en el 215 oeste de la calle 125 es un nuevo Centro de Cuidado EmblemHealth de la Vecindad, abierto este jueves 24 de enero para todos los visitantes.
Ben Scaccia, Director de Operaciones de EmblemHealth, explicó que las metas son triples: ofrecer servicio impecable; ayudar a los miembros a navegar por las aguas del cuidado de la salud y ofrecer una sensación de integración comunitaria.
“A la gente le ha cautivado,” dijo Scaccia sonriendo. “Es un lugar como ningún otro que han visto antes. Deseamos crear un lugar en donde la gente se siente realmente cómoda.”
EmblemHealth es al mayor asegurador de salud con sede en Nueva York, y la apertura del centro en la calle 125 es uno de dos lugares en la ciudad.

“Estamos tratando de ver a la persona de manera total”, explico Christa Hill, Enlace Comunitario del centro.
La idea, explica ella, es ayudar al vecindario una persona a la vez.
A tal fin, Hill espera también asociarse dentro de poco con grupos cívicos locales, quienes puede que se beneficien del espacio comunitario.
