Luz might be a typical girl from Washington Heights.
She has a short crop of bright blue hair and favors flak jackets. Her Dominican family has an Asian-Latinx heritage. She and her best friend Marisol are currently studying in Puerto Rico.
Oh, and they both have superpowers.
Luz, aka La La Liu, is the newest superhero in La Borinqueña #3, the graphic novel series by artist Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez. The latest installment finds La Borinqueña (Marisol’s alter ego) adrift in a netherworld. While others believe the Puerto Rican superhero is dead, La La instinctively knows Marisol is alive but needs help.
In trying to save her best friend, La La develops her own superpowers—and transforms into Luz—a creature of light.
Miranda-Rodríguez planted the seed for La La to develop superpowers earlier in the series. When La La is overcome by a wave while surfing, La Borinqueña rescues her. When CPR doesn’t revive her, she uses her superpowers to jumpstart La La back to life.
La Borinqueña obtained her power from a mystical star and the Taino mother goddess Atabex. Because La La received an infusion of life from La Borinqueña, she evolves into Luz, and is lit from within. When she looks up to the night sky, her eyes glow.
“La La’s abilities are centered around light and the essence of light. She actually is powerful enough to light herself up literally, as a light,” said Miranda-Rodríguez.
She can even control the density of light, converting it into a solid mass. With her bright eyes, she can create invincible forcefields around her fists, or around herself and others. “She has the power of light,” he said. “And that’s why I named her Luz.”
He also picked the name because it’s short. “It’s so much easier to say than La Borinqueña,” he said.
While he jokes about the name, Miranda-Rodríguez is adamant about embracing light and positivity. “It’s time that we start looking towards light, and hopefully this will be a way that you can actually find healing. Not only of our health, but of our spirit as well.”
La Borinqueña’s superhuman strength and Luz’s light are used to fight polluters and ultimately save the environment—and the planet.
Luz’s light is centered around love. “It was actually the love that she has for her best friend that she was able to connect with her and never give up hope,” he said.
Luz also happens to be the first LGBTQ character in his superhero universe. When first introduced in Book #1, La La’s sexuality isn’t specified. There was a lot speculation about the way she dressed. “Fans were always asking if she wants to come out of the closet,” he said.
Along with her superpowers, La La’s sexuality and sense of identity evolves in its own time. “I wanted to create a character that really came from a place of love,” said Miranda-Rodríguez. “Not a place of anger, or revenge or an offensive or defensive way.”
His superhero universe is populated with people whose alter egos ride their bikes or take the subway from Brooklyn to Manhattan. He strives for inclusiveness and weaves history and mythology into his work. But it’s clearly important to him that the characters look and feel authentic.
Creating an Asian-Latinx superhero is acknowledging another piece of Caribbean history. “There is a very strong Chinese community in the Dominican Republic,” he said. “In fact, Barrio Chino —which is literally Chinatown in Spanish—is one of the oldest Chinese districts in the Caribbean.”
As Asians emigrated from the Caribbean, they brought their cultural mélange to New York. Miranda-Rodríguez goes to Spanish Chinese restaurants and listens to the cooks speak Spanish. “One of the beautiful things about growing up in New York City is finding Chinese Cuban restaurants,” he said. “I honestly grew up thinking that all Asians spoke Spanish with no accent. When they spoke English, they sounded like other members of my family.”
La Borinqueña is self-published and available from Miranda-Rodríguez’s website and other venues. Proceeds from the graphic novels are invested in his philanthropic efforts to help with the ongoing recovery from the hurricanes that devastated Puerto Rico. In 2018, he and his wife, artist Kyung Jeon-Miranda, established La Borinqueña Grants Program. In 2020, the program awarded $165,000 to Puerto Rican non-profits.
Miranda-Rodríguez hints that more superheroes will be developed for the series. While he appreciates enthusiastic fans who say, “I can’t wait for the movie!” he makes it clear that books are always the original source of inspiration.
“Studios are making millions—if not billions—of dollars off of intellectual property. It’s always important to note that the creators of these properties don’t,” he said. “If they get invited to the opening of the film, it’s an afterthought.”
It’s important to celebrate the books themselves, he said. “As an independent publisher, that’s our bread and butter. And we are actually, quite frankly, the only comic book series that’s intrinsically linked with philanthropy. And that’s something we will continue to be committed to.”

Luz podría ser una chica típica de Washington Heights.
Tiene un pelo corto de color azul brillante y prefiere los chalecos antibalas. Su familia dominicana tiene una herencia asiática-latinx. Ella y su mejor amiga Marisol están estudiando actualmente en Puerto Rico.
Ah, y ambas tienen súper poderes.
Luz, también conocida como La La Liu, es la más nueva súper heroína de La Borinqueña #3, la serie de novelas gráficas del artista Edgardo Miranda-Rodríguez. La última entrega encuentra a La Borinqueña (el alter ego de Marisol) a la deriva en un inframundo. Mientras que otros creen que la súper heroína puertorriqueña está muerta, La La sabe instintivamente que Marisol está viva, pero necesita ayuda.
Al tratar de salvar a su mejor amiga, La La desarrolla sus propios súper poderes y se transforma en Luz, una criatura de luz.
Miranda-Rodríguez plantó la semilla para que La La desarrollara súper poderes al inicio de la serie. Cuando La La es vencida por una ola mientras surfea, La Borinqueña la rescata. Cuando la RCP no la revive, usa sus súper poderes para hacer que La La vuelva a la vida.
La Borinqueña obtuvo su poder de una estrella mística y de la diosa madre taína Atabex. Debido a que La La recibió una infusión de vida de La Borinqueña, se convierte en Luz y se enciende desde adentro. Cuando mira hacia el cielo nocturno, sus ojos brillan.
“Las habilidades de La La se centran en la luz y la esencia de la luz. De hecho, es lo suficientemente poderosa como para iluminarse a sí misma, literalmente, como una luz”, dijo Miranda-Rodríguez.
Incluso puede controlar la densidad de la luz, convirtiéndola en una masa sólida. Con sus ojos brillantes, puede crear campos de fuerza invencibles alrededor de sus puños, o alrededor de ella y de los demás. “Ella tiene el poder de la luz”, dijo. “Y por eso la llamé Luz”.
También eligió el nombre porque es corto. “Es mucho más fácil de decir que La Borinqueña”, explicó.
Mientras bromea sobre el nombre, Miranda-Rodríguez se muestra inflexible en abrazar la luz y la positividad. “Es hora de que comencemos a mirar hacia la luz y, con suerte, esta será una forma de encontrar la sanación. No solo de nuestra salud, sino también de nuestro espíritu”.
La fuerza sobrehumana de La Borinqueña y la luz de Luz se utilizan para luchar contra los contaminadores y, en última instancia, salvar al medio ambiente y al planeta.
La luz de Luz se centra en el amor. “En realidad, fue por el amor que siente por su mejor amiga que pudo conectarse con ella y nunca perder la esperanza”, dijo.
Luz también es el primer personaje LGBTQ en su universo de superhéroes. Cuando fue presentada por primera vez en Book #1, la sexualidad de La La no fue especificada. Se especuló mucho sobre la forma en que vestía. “Los fanáticos siempre preguntaban si ella quería salir del armario”, dijo.
Junto con sus súper poderes, la sexualidad y el sentido de identidad de La La evolucionan a su debido tiempo. “Quería crear un personaje que realmente viniera de un lugar de amor”, dijo Miranda-Rodríguez. “No es un lugar de ira, ni de venganza, ni de una forma ofensiva o defensiva”.
Su universo de superhéroes está poblado por personas cuyos alter egos andan en bicicleta o toman el metro de Brooklyn a Manhattan. Se esfuerza por la inclusión y entreteje la historia y la mitología en su obra. Pero para él es claramente importante que los personajes se vean y se sientan auténticos.
Crear un superhéroe asiático-latino es reconocer otra pieza de la historia caribeña. “Hay una comunidad china muy fuerte en la República Dominicana”, dijo. “De hecho, Barrio Chino, es uno de los distritos chinos más antiguos del Caribe”.
Cuando los asiáticos emigraron del Caribe, llevaron su mezcla cultural a Nueva York. Miranda-Rodríguez va a los restaurantes chino-españoles y escucha a los cocineros hablar en español. “Una de las cosas hermosas de crecer en la ciudad de Nueva York es encontrar restaurantes chino cubanos”, dijo. “Honestamente, crecí pensando que todos los asiáticos hablaban español sin acento. Cuando hablaban inglés, sonaban como otros miembros de mi familia”.
La Borinqueña es una publicación propia y está disponible en el sitio web de Miranda-Rodríguez y en otros lugares. Las ganancias de las novelas gráficas se invierten en sus esfuerzos filantrópicos para ayudar con la recuperación en curso de los huracanes que devastaron a Puerto Rico. En 2018, él y su esposa, la artista Kyung Jeon-Miranda, crearon el Programa de Becas La Borinqueña. En 2020, el programa otorgó $165,000 dólares a organizaciones puertorriqueñas sin fines de lucro.
Miranda-Rodríguez insinúa que se desarrollarán más superhéroes para la serie. Si bien agradece a los fanáticos entusiastas que dicen: ¡no puedo esperar a la película!, deja claro que los libros son siempre la fuente original de inspiración.
“Los estudios están ganando millones, si no es que miles de millones de dólares gracias a la propiedad intelectual. Siempre es importante tener en cuenta que los creadores de estas propiedades no lo hacen”, dijo. “Si los invitan a la inauguración de la película, es adicional”.
Es importante celebrar los libros en sí mismos, dijo. “Como editor independiente, ese es nuestro pan de cada día. Y, francamente, somos la única serie de cómics que está intrínsecamente vinculada con la filantropía. Y eso es algo con lo que continuaremos comprometidos”.
