A feast for the ages

There was more to be seen at La Marina than usual.
Beyond the sweeping views of the Palisades and the majesty of the George Washington Bridge, there was another sight to be behold this past Sun., Nov. 24th, as hundreds of seniors gathered for the Second Annual Seniors’ Luncheon hosted by EmblemHealth at the dining destination.
Just days before the actual holiday, area residents were treated to a feast of roast turkey, shredded pork, mashed sweet potatoes, green beans and corn, while a live four-piece salsa band provided live entertainment.
But nothing – or no one – seemed to energize the group more than a surprise visit by New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodríguez, who was born in Washington Heights.
Upon his arrival, luncheon guests swarmed Rodríguez, who shook hands and signed autographs. Some gripped his arm and drew him close to chat or to snap photos with their phones. Rodríguez happily obliged.
“He came from the community, and we always welcome people back to the community,” said State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who also attended the luncheon, together with Assemblymember Gabriela Rosa.

Rodríguez is currently seeking to appeal a 211-game ban mandated by Major League Baseball.
Before his arrival, as word spread that he would be joining the group, many expressed their support.
“Human beings commit errors,” said Janet Roque.
Roque is a regular at Riverstone Senior Center at 99 Fort Washington Avenue. As she spoke, she eyed the salsa band and considered dancing.
“I’m not a good dancer, but I try,” she smiled.
She certainly has had practice, explaining that she enjoyed the classes offered at Riverstone, particularly Zumba and yoga. The exercise is particularly important, as Roque suffers from Type 1 diabetes.
Roque was also a regular of sorts at La Marina; the luncheon marked her second holiday feast there, as she had also attended last year’s event.
Leidy Jorge, the Program Director at Riverstone Senior Center, expected that the seniors would be requesting the event next year as well.

“They love this place,” she said. “They have a lot of fun.”
The event also offered a bit more than just casual merriment.
“It’s a matter of getting the seniors out, and giving them a healthy meal,” said David Flemister, EmblemHealth’s Director of Community Marketing.
In addition to the nutritious meal and stunning backdrop, luncheon guests also took health pledges, and received care packages with water bottles and pedometers.
And Flemister noted that Rodríguez’s visit was a coincidence.
“He showed up for 15 minutes,” he explained. “We were here before, and we were here after.”
PJ Rivera is a periodic visitor to the neighboring Inwood Hill Park, and frequently ventures out onto the small beach adjacent to La Marina.
“I like seeing Mother Earth and Father Water together,” he said.
Rivera was at the water’s edge as he heard the music playing from La Marina.
“I thought, how chévere, and came inside,” smiled Rivera.
For him, the meal was but a fortuitous reminder of what enjoying time outdoors could bring.
“I love to go and breathe the fresh air.”

Había más que ver que lo habitual en La Marina.
El pasado domingo 24 de noviembre, había otro espectáculo digno de contemplar, más allá de las vistas panorámicas de los Palisades y la majestuosidad del puente George Washington, ya que cientos de personas mayores se reunieron para el segundo almuerzo anual organizado por EmblemHealth en este lugar gastronómico.
Apenas unos días antes de las verdaderas fiestas, los residentes del área fueron invitados a un festín de pavo asado, cerdo rallado, puré de batatas, judías verdes y maíz, mientras que una banda en vivo de salsa de cuatro piezas ofreció entretenimiento.
Pero nada -ni nadie- podia crear la algarabía el grupo que creó una visita sorpresa del jugador de los Yankees de Nueva York, Alex Rodríguez, quien nació en Washington Heights.
A su llegada, los invitados al almuerzo se arremolinaron alrededor de la estrella, quien los saludó con la mano y firmó autógrafos. Algunos agarraron su brazo y se acercaron para charlar o tomar fotos con sus teléfonos. Rodríguez felizmente accedió.
“Él vino de la comunidad y siempre damos la bienvenida a la gente de la comunidad”, dijo el senador estatal Adriano Espaillat, quien también asistió al almuerzo, junto con la asambleísta Gabriela Rosa.

Actualmente Rodríguez está tratando de apelar una prohibición de 211 juegos, el mandato de la Liga Mayor de Béisbol.
Antes de su llegada, mientras se corría la voz de que él se uniría al grupo, muchos expresaron su apoyo.
“Los seres humanos cometen errores”, dijo Janet Roque.
Roque es un habitual en Centro de Personas Mayores Riverstone en el 99 de la avenida Fort Washington. Mientras hablaba, miró a la banda de salsa y consideró bailar.
“Yo no soy una buena bailarina pero lo intento”, sonrió.
Ella sin duda tiene práctica y explicó que disfruta de las clases que se ofrecen en Riverstone, especialmente Zumba y yoga. El ejercicio es particularmente importante, ya Roque sufre de diabetes tipo 1.
Roque también es un habitual de las clases en La Marina, el almuerzo marcó su segunda visita al evento de celebración, ya que también asistió a la edición del año pasado.
Leidy Jorge, directora de Programas en el Centro para personas mayores Riverstone, espera que los adultos mayores soliciten el evento para el próximo año también.

“A ellos les encanta este lugar”, dijo. “Se divierten mucho”.
El evento también ofrece un poco más que alegría informal.
“Es una cuestión de lograr que las personas mayores salgan y reciban una comida saludable”, dijo David Flemister, Director de Mercadeo Comunitario en EmblemHealth.
Además de la comida nutritiva y el impresionante telón de fondo, los invitados al almuerzo también tomaron compromisos de salud y recibieron paquetes de ayuda con botellas de agua y podómetros.
Y Flemister señaló que la visita de Rodríguez fue una coincidencia.
“Se presentó durante 15 minutos”, explicó. “Estábamos aquí antes y nos quedamos aquí después”.
PJ Rivera es un visitante habitual del vecino parque Inwood Hill, y con frecuencia se aventura a salir a la pequeña playa adyacente a La Marina.
“Me gusta ver a la Madre Tierra y el Padre Agua juntos”, dijo.
Rivera se encontraba en la orilla del agua cuando escuchó la música que se reproducía desde La Marina.
“Pensé, qué chévere, y entré”, sonrió Rivera.
Para él, el almuerzo era más que un recordatorio fortuito de lo que disfrutar del tiempo al aire libre podría traer.
“Me encanta ir y respirar el aire fresco”.
