March 2 – March 7

Did you know that the United Palace was featured in NYC Media’s Wonder Theatres special recently? Built during the movie palace boom in the 1920s, the United Palace opened its doors in 1930 as an opulent movie house that transported moviegoers to a lavish, almost otherworldly, setting. Today, the venerable United Palace has become a haven and a hub for the arts and culture of northern Manhattan. It still fills with awe anyone that enters this one-of-a-kind edifice. The United Palace is one of the four movie palaces featured in the must-see episode.

This summer is shaping up to be a doozy. The first annual Higher Ground Festival is going down on June 27th as part of the always-grand NoMAA Uptown Arts Stroll. The HG Festival is looking for artists of all stripes to take part in this community-affirming, cultural extravaganza. That means: music, dance, visual, spoken word, magic, comedy. In short: Art in any of it’s many manifestations. You have until March 15th to apply. Chosen participants receive 3 months to create collaborative projects as well as a project stipend and workspace.

Everyone is buzzing about ABC’s newest Drama American Crime that debuted on Thursday, March 5th. Well guess what? Uptown actor Elvis Nolasco is a vital part of a diverse cast that includes Timothy Hutton, Felicity Huffman, Regina King, Johnny Ortiz and Caitlin Gerard among many other talented actors. The show takes a long, hard and unflinching look at race, crime and class in America. Catch it every Thursday at 10 pm est and show love to a local.

Telemundo’s Top Chef Estrellas show has a really neat contest that could mean a $5K windfall for local non-profit CHALK. All you have to do is click on a link and vote for Henry Santos and CHALK could win a cool 5 grand. It is that easy. CHALK (Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for Kids) is all about preventing childhood obesity and promoting healthy lifestyles in this neighborhood. They do important work in this community, so let’s spread the word and get them that cash!

My wife and our wellness contributor, Eileen Z. Fuentes, penned a poignant piece on how her triple-negative breast cancer diagnosis help to connect her to her heritage.
