The proprietors of Indian Road Café and Market, which opened
in June of 2008, hand-picked the ingredients for its success.
Choosing a picturesque corner across from Inwood Hill Park,
they gutted a former bodega to create a warm space with exposed
brick, large windows, high ceilings, and lots of oak. Being
longtime Inwood residents, the owners knew what their neighborhood
needed: A coffee bar (with critically lauded Counter
Culture Coffee) featuring fresh baked goods from local artisans
and free WiFi. A wine bar with an eclectic and global selection
of great, affordable wines and a long and varied microbrew
beer list. A café menu based on seasonal and local produce and
meats (much of it from the Isham Street Greenmarket.) A gallery
space with rotating work from local artists. And finally a
market featuring locally produced goods and specialty items,
from gourmet doggie treats to cured meats from Arthur Avenue
in the Bronx.
They ended up creating the kind of place where they would
want to eat, drink, read and laugh with family and friends.
