City Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito helped organize “Stand Up!,” an open forum on stop and frisk for community residents.
Sara Diallo, 30, and her boyfriend were asleep on the train when two police officers woke them up.
The homeless couple had nowhere to go and felt safer and warmer on the train.
They were forced to leave and the cops searched her boyfriend for drugs and weapons, she said.
His pockets were empty, but he was still arrested that night.

January 21– January 26
On a wickedly frigid night, Thursday, January 24th to be exact, Trouble In The Heights, the United Palace and Washington Heights made history. Trouble In The Heights became the first movie in over 40 years to be shown on the silver screen of the United Palace. Over 700 people came from the neighborhood and beyond to take part in this historic occasion. Check out the pictures of the festivities courtesy of Art By Dj Boy as well as a post that showed all the tweets about the movie and the evening. Not to mention that we also ran my review of the film that I referred to as the Latino Boys N The Hood.

Have you asked your children what history lessons they’ve learned lately?
If your child's curriculum resembles my daughter’s own, they’re all busy with the traditional Black History Month profile, wherein each child picks a famous or popular African-American figure to research and present to their classmates.
How about enriching the learning by taking your child on a field trip or historical adventure, and making it your family's own?
Our children should have a unique take on what it is to be a person of color Black or Latino, as many of us and our neighbors are one or both. Moreover, the communities in which we live offer abundant opportunity to experience cultural riches first-hand.

The original Usnavi, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
One is named Usnavi.
The other, Ali Saleh.
There are phonetic similarities in their names, and in their occasional disposition towards the occupation they share.
“I hate it,” says Saleh. “When you get a bodega, you’re married to the business.”
And Usnavi de la Vega agrees.
