El Presidente, a neighborhood fixture for a quarter-century,
has a special place in the hearts of many Northern Manhattanites.
Maybe it’s the bustling activity at the countertop serviced
by capable uniformed waitresses. Or maybe it’s the easy
island atmosphere of the expansive dining area, welcoming
waves of hospital workers for the great lunch specials. Likely,
it is the attitude fostered by owner Luis Muñiz who says the eatery
is so-named because “It’s our hope that everyone feels like
the president, the leader, when they walk through our doors.”
Beyond serving excellent Dominican cuisine, El Presidente’s
menu spans the Hispanic Caribbean. Try the satisfying Cuban
sandwich ($3.95). For the early mornings or late nights, El
President’s mangú is legendary: mashed plantains topped with
caramelized onions and served with what is called “los tres golpes”
(the three hits)” eggs, salami, and fried cheese. With great
prices and big portions it’s no wonder El Presidente has been a
neighborhood favorite year after year.
