Washington Heights Academy principal Crystal Felix is joined by elected and school officials to cut the ribbon to inaugurate her new $67 million school building on Sherman Avenue.

The first day of school is always filled with excitement and anticipation. For the 150-plus students of Washington Heights Academy, the first day of school was doubly special – it was the first day of school outside the trailers on Nagle Avenue and into a brand new $67 million building, P.S. 263 on Sherman Avenue.

The New York Police Department has released a sketch of the man that assaulted a female jogger just before 8 a.m. in Inwood Hill Park on Tue. Aug. 31.


NIMIC hosts job fair

Next month the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation will hold a job fair on Thu., Oct. 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in Washington Heights at the Palace Theater.


Improvements coming to Northern Manhattan’s parks

Improvements to Bennett Park will make better use of the
paved play space at the southern end, install a Revolutionary War-era cannon
and create a water feature for the playground.

In the next year three Northern Manhattan parks will see some big changes. The parks, J. Hood Wright, Bennett and Wright Brothers Park are each getting multi-million dollar infusions of cash and much needed upgrades.


 

Fourth annual Uptown Networking Night Sept. 29

 

The 4th Annual Uptown Networking Night, hosted by Washington Heights native Beverly Susan Carter, will be held on Wed., Sept. 29, at 5 p.m. at her H&R Block Tax office 3933 Broadway off of W. 165th St.

for Inwood diners.

From Morocco to Thailand in Inwood

Park Terrace Bistro on Broadway near W. 207th Street used to be known for serving some of the city’s best Moroccan dishes before it closed last year. Now the location has a menu that is inspired by a different continent as Yummy Thai opened its doors in mid August.


 

NYRP appoints new executive director

 

New York Restoration Project has appointed a new executive director, Amy Freitag, effective Oct. 1. The 15-year-old organization, founded by actress Bette Midler, is dedicated to reclaiming and restoring parks, community gardens and open space in disadvantaged neighborhoods throughout the city. Locally, NYRP runs the New Leaf Restaurant and Bar in Ft. Tryon Park and does programming in Swindler Cove in Inwood.


“Sosua: Dare to Dance Together” starts second season at Y – holds youth casting call

The original production “Sosua: Dare to Dance Together” is gearing up for 2011 performances and is looking for a cast.


 

Centro de Altagracia de Fe y Justicia to host community health fair

 

On Sun., Sept. 26 Centro Altagracia de Fe y Justicia and Church of the Incarnation will host a community health fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents will be able to sign up for health insurance, get a free blood pressure screening and a mammography van will be on site. In addition to the health services there will be activities for children and giveaways.


Calling all artists for feedback

On Mon., Sep. 20 at 6 p.m., the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) will hold its first town hall meeting for artists in Northern Manhattan.


Laundromat takes over long-vacant Gruenbaum’s Bakery storefront on 181st Street

Independent real estate agent Navahjo Stoller passed out
fliers in the neighborhood and made a YouTube tour of the space to attract a
tenant. It worked. A Wadsworth
  Avenue businessman decided to open a laundromat in
the space.

The old Gruenbaum’s Bakery storefront at 725 W. 181st St., vacant since 2006, has been rented by a laundromat. Instead of warm cookies and bread, the smell of soap suds will soon waft through the air.
