Even though school has been out all summer, contractors for the Department of Education have been hard at work on renovation projects throughout Northern Manhattan schools.

According to Jack Zarin-Rosenfeld, a spokesperson for the department, the DOE has spent $140 million on 23 renovation projects in District 6, which includes schools in Northern Manhattan.

These projects are part of the department’s 2010-2014 five-year Capital Plan. Those improvements include projects like a facelift for P.S. 48 on Broadway and W. 186th Street, new Internet, telephone and intercom lines in the classrooms of PS 178 on Bogardus and Ellwood Streets, and new toilets at P.S. 189 on Amsterdam Avenue and W. 189th Street.

Citywide the DOE will spend $11.3 billion over the five years on physical upgrades to its schools. This year the department will spend the least during the plan - $198 million. Next year it has budgeted $374 million for improvements citywide. In the third year of the plan it will spend $214, peaking at $443.8 million in the last year of the Capital Plan.

Though Zarin-Rosenfeld could not give dollar costs for all of the renovations in Northern Manhattan, the following improvements are done or are in the works.
