Six units at New Amsterdam condo in Washington Heights to be auctioned off Print E-mail
Friday, January 28, 2011

The New Amsterdam condominium, seen here from Highbridge Park when it went on the market in 2008, will have six units auction off on Feb. 13.

If you are looking for a deal on the ultimate local gift for your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, consider attending a unique real estate auction on Sun., Feb. 13 when six units in the New Amsterdam condominium will go to the highest bidders.

The new – meaning unlived in – units range in minimum bid from one bedrooms starting at $125,000 to a three-bedroom penthouse with balcony for $300,000. To get an idea of how big of a discount the auction price is, when the building first went on the market in the spring of 2008, a one-bedroom unit was priced at $329,000 and two-bedrooms started at $529,000.

The New Amsterdam, at Amsterdam Avenue and W. 177th Street across from Highbridge Park, had the misfortune to hit the market months before credit markets froze. According to Gus Perry of Stein-Perry Real Estate, about eight of the 29 units had been sold before the financing on the building fell through and the building had to start from square one.

Since regrouping in 2009, the building has sold three units and rented three. Two commercial spaces have been sold and occupied.

The luxury building, a novelty so far east of Broadway, sports stainless steel appliances and dishwashers, air conditioning in every room, video intercoms, communal outdoor spaces, 13 garage parking spaces and balconies on most units. Just about every unit has two bathrooms.

The auction company, Sheldon Good & Company, is holding the auction at 10:30 a.m. at the Roosevelt Hotel, 45th Street and Madison Avenue. In the afternoon 25 units in the East River Tower, located around Astoria, Queens, will go on the block.
