The P.O. Michael Buczek Little League is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Franklin Díaz made it to the minor leagues, and played in the Dominican Republic for a Royals affiliate team before a torn ligament sent him back to New York.
Díaz is one of 10 police officers that coach the Police Officer Michael J. Buczek Little League.
This past Sat., Apr. 13th marked the 25th anniversary of the league, started by Michael Buczek’s father and Sgt. Johnny Moynihan after Buczek was killed in the line of duty serving the 34th Precinct in 1988.
Although it is covered in Astroturf now, the baseball diamond at Highbridge Park was a veritable sandlot filled with rocks when the league first started.

April 8 – April 12
Did you know that “deaths from cancer and heart disease are lower in Washington Heights than in New York City” overall? We started the week with a re-posting of a provocative article about what is referred to as the “barrio advantage” via the news analysis site PRI The World. The piece posits that “there seems to be something about living in a largely Latino area that is at least partly helpful for health.”
Hip-Hop Uptown is shaping up to be quite a force. Our Monday Mood Music column featured the latest song from Andy Mineo entitled You Will. We also posted an infectious tune named The WHIN from the one and only Charlie Cruz featuring an ill verse from my brother Tellie Floyd. Speaking of Uptown Hip-Hop, the homie Kid Glory celebrated his birthday in grand style at the soft opening of Dyckman’s newest hot spot, Uptown Social (186 Dyckman). Our very own Emil Baez was there and captured some awesome images of the brand spanking new establishment.

Story and photos by Robin Elisabeth Kilmer

A group of medical researchers, staff, patients and advocates from Columbia University Medical Center traveled to Washington D.C. to protest funding cuts.
Standing tall in northern Manhattan, the Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) is an institution whose presence has long been felt.
Beyond its renown as a center of care, it is widely regarded for medical research work, which takes place across several schools.
The fruits of its labor in medical research are felt in the study of diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, emphysema, and strokes.
The work at the center regularly makes headlines at medical and scientific publications; the most recent were a study linking cognitive issues to higher levels of infection in the blood and the discovery of a gene linking to Alzheimer’s in African-Americans.
