Located just 11 miles from Washington Heights is one of the centers of world financial activity. If you were to take the 40-minute train ride to Wall Street at the end of last year, you would have seen most of these companies hosting big parties. What were they celebrating besides their bonuses? Well, in 2010 Wall Street had its fourth most profitable year in history. Yet just a few months later, those of us a short trip away in Northern Manhattan have little to celebrate. Mayor Bloomberg just presented a $65 billion proposed operating budget that includes drastic cuts to nearly every human service agency, in spite of the continuing unemployment and resulting economic hardship faced by our community.

After a long, cold winter, most people are thrilled when spring arrives. But for residents of Washington Heights, warmer weather brings a scourge that makes some of us miss the ice and snow: the motorcycle gangs.

March 7 – March 12
We began the week with pictures from Coogan’s Salsa, Blues and Shamrocks 5K courtesy of our very own Briana E. Heard. Not only did Briana document the event with her photography but she also ran in the race: all in a day’s work for Ms. Heard.

We began the week with the sad news that the New Caporal Fried Chicken and Shrimp (3772 Broadway) is no longer with us. It was all very sudden and grieving Uptowners commemorated by reading Claudio E. Cabrera’s heartfelt Ode to Caporal which was prophetically penned nearly a year ago.

March arrives.
Strain a bit, and even as the bitter frost of morning rises wearily to greet you, you will hear, should you seek it, a note of birdsong. You will, amid the mottled piles of grey snow, spot a tiny bud of green.

We began the week with an extraordinary entry by the one and only Briana E. Heard. “Lessons on Becoming the Perfect Woman” was a candid and somewhat provocative piece on what makes the ideal women in this day and age. Do men want a woman that is an independent operator or one that can throw down in the kitchen? Check out Briana’s piece to find out her take on the subject.

Your child or teen has a 47 percent chance of being overweight and developing serious obesity-related health problems in adulthood such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental health problems. America is facing a pressing childhood obesity epidemic and here in Washington Heights, we’re facing an even bigger epidemic. It’s extremely worrisome that in our neighborhood, 47 percent of our children are overweight or obese compared to the national average of 35.5 percent, according to data from New York City’s health department. Moreover, the same study also found that our kids have less access to medical care if they’re obese.

We began the week with an Uptown Artist column featuring the stunning photography of Uptown native Ruben Henriquez. An air of mystery envelops much of Mr. Henriquez’s work. While many of the images are familiar, they are at the same time tinged by a pervading sense of otherworldliness.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a summary of a letter CB12 sent to the N.Y. State Department of Environmental Conservation on Jan. 25, 2011 concerning environmental issues at a site that was a former gas station that is being considered for development.
Dear Mr. Sadique Ahmed, Project Manager, N.Y. State Department of Environmental Conservation
From what we know about the condition of 4566 Broadway, it is clear that this is a very serious situation, and it is our hope that the supplemental investigation will produce the information necessary to make a determination on the level of threat that the brownfield site poses to this community.
