November 7 – November 12
I cannot overstate how proud I am of Uptown for taking part in large numbers in the End to End March for the 99% on Monday, November 7th. For 7 hours and 11 miles we marched, chanted and sang all the way from Washington Heights to Wall Street. There we were; the young, the old, Black, Latino, White, Asian and everything in between. United, determined and empowered with the belief that America’s best days are still in front of her. Democracy is on the move.

October 31 – November 5
We began the week with a heartwarming story by our very own Carolina Pichardo on a young Uptown mom who decided to do her part to combat homelessness in our neighborhood. For the past 2 years, Jennie Lee Genao has been making regular rounds in the community to provide care packages to homeless people. For more information or to join her, send an e-mail to

October 24 – October 29
We began the week with a photo essay on the Reclaim the Heights group that has sprung up in response to the chord struck by the Occupy Wall Street movement. The amazing pictures by Dj Boy take the viewer beyond the slogans, placards and protests to the meetings and gatherings where real participatory democracy is beginning to take shape.

I have said on many occasions that there is nothing in the world that compares to an Uptown summer. Uptown summers are magical, memorable and magnificent creatures. Certain Uptown summers leave an indelible imprint on your memory. They become the stuff of legend. This summer will go down in history as one such year and the Uptown Collective was there to capture, document and broadcast that kinetic dynamism for the world to see, hear and feel. With that said, check out our site for the Uptown Collective’s annual, multi-media summer retrospective.

It’s official folks, Word Up Books, Uptown’s sole community owned and operated bookstore, will now remain open until the end of November. While this is a victory indeed, we must remain involved by supporting and patronizing this wonderful community affirming space. Long live Word Up Books!

“¡Piragua!”
No sooner have you decided to leave behind cherry, your childhood choice, and settle definitively on sesame seed (ajonjolí o cocol) as your new favorite than your daily fix starts to dry up. After conducting an exhaustive series of tastings all summer long, squaring off with the pig-tailed, gap-toothed gangs on street corners, braving the sharp elbows of stroller-pushing moms, and not a few stained white shirts, it all goes away.

We began the week with a reposting from the Manhattan Times of Gloria Pazmiño’s poignant September 11th piece. We also featured some stirring and solemn pictures taken by our very own Paul Lomax at Ground Zero during the 10 year anniversary of the day that was seared into the world’s collective memory.

The DR Travelogue is a book/project that has been gestating in my mind for the last 5 years. It is my heart-felt ode to Quisqueya La Bella, a place that remains in the hearts and minds of many of the Dominicans living abroad. The DR Travelogue is a native son’s poignant and hilarious journey to the heart, soul and soil of the Dominican Republic. Check out the site for a host of pictures of my recent trip to the DR using the popular photo-sharing app, Instagram.

Hometown hero, Irina Falconi, made quite an impression at this year’s U.S. Open. Even though the 23rd seed Sabine Lisicki eventually defeated her, Irina has established herself as one of the fastest rising US players on tour. She has also been part of the resurgence of American female tennis players on the world stage.

Hey Uptown, I write this recap from the picturesque country of the Dominican Republic. While Hurricane Irene hit most of you once, I actually met her a few days earlier in the DR. Luckily for me and the rest of the island, it was mostly rain and a pretty scary cross-country trip while she was in full swing. Then as I was preparing to return to NYC, our flight was cancelled and our flight back was delayed for a full week. I guess there are worse places to be stranded in.

A midday scene in Santo Domingo, the capital city of the Dominican Republic.
It is the season of fits and starts in the sweep of land I come from, when the sky strips back clouds to reveal a fierce sun that warms the blood, and then douses you with a cold crack of rain in the same hour.

Even though the rain put a damper on the post-DR parade festivities that usually takes place Uptown, a sizeable crowd still showed up at Apt 78 (4447 Broadway) to celebrate their first annual post parade party. Check out our eye-popping pictures of the event courtesy of Ruben Henriquez of HelpRuben.com fame.

Do you know what a Freegan is? No, it is not a curse word. According to Freegan.info, “Freegans are people who employ alternative strategies for living based on limited participation in the conventional economy and minimal consumption of resources. Perhaps the most notorious freegan strategy is what is commonly called urban foraging or dumpster diving.” With that said, the Huffington Post recently profiled Uptown freegan, Gio Andollo.

School’s out! For kids, summer vacation means hitting the pools, baseball games, or just hanging out with friends. But in this day and age, it also means more time online. And for parents, that can be a concern.

Did you know that the New York Daily News recently declared John’s Fried Chicken (512 W. 207th Street) the best fried chicken spot in all of New York City? The John’s brand has been around for almost 30 years and since Corporal is now defunct, their fried chicken dominance is assured. So the next time you finish a night of imbibing at one of the many awesome bars, pubs and lounges in the neighborhood, hit up John’s for some greasy goodness and dig into the best fried chicken in the city.
