“Brides” in white – and in step – march against violence

Josie Ashton, wearing the black head scarf, explains that she began the Brides March when, after Ricart’s death, she felt the slain bride was being re-victimized by misrepresentations. Now in its 11th year, the march has grown. “It’s become an international movement,” Ashton said. “We have thousands of women walking in different parts of the world and in different states of America.”

Rising early in the day, Josie Ashton took care in donning the white wedding dress. Cloaked in her formal attire, she traveled to Fort Washington Presbyterian Church in Washington Heights, where she was greeted by others who had gathered together to mark the special day.

Living El Alto: The Day Uptown Occupied Wall Street

Mino Lora, co-executive director of The People’s Theatre Project gathered the theatre troops this past weekend when Uptown went to Occupy Wall Street.

For three weeks, there has been a protest unfolding on the streets of our city’s financial center downtown. It goes by the name “Occupy Wall Street,” and it has slowly but steadily been growing each day. It has both captured headlines, and has been ignored.

For many who come as tourists to New York City, the sights and sounds sought are more likely to be associated with Times Square, Central Park or a window-shopping jaunt down Fifth Avenue – the city as captured by Woody Allen, focused only on Manhattan Island, and only from 96th Street south.

Another good year

Some years ago, I attended a dinner gathering at the home of a dear family friend. Upon approach, the house exuded the polished warmth and heady fragrance that comes from days of preparation. The windows from which tumbling children could be spotted at a distance gleamed; the wood was burnished from polishing and the linens were iron-crisped.

UC Recap - September 26-October 1

September 26 – October 1

I have said on many occasions that there is nothing in the world that compares to an Uptown summer. Uptown summers are magical, memorable and magnificent creatures. Certain Uptown summers leave an indelible imprint on your memory. They become the stuff of legend. This summer will go down in history as one such year and the Uptown Collective was there to capture, document and broadcast that kinetic dynamism for the world to see, hear and feel. With that said, check out our site for the Uptown Collective’s annual, multi-media summer retrospective.
