Neighborhood Blogwatch

by Carla Zanoni

Tiz'ku L'mitzvot

Writings and musings from a young Black woman in Miami Southwestern Pennsylvania in a quest to become an observant (a.k.a. 'Orthodox') Jew.

This author does not seem to find the idea of living in New York City all that appealing, never mind Northern Manhattan, yet she writes about the soaring numbers of observant Orthodox Jews she’s learned have moved from small towns to New York City. Her view of the city is of interest as is her recent music playlist called “Saturday Night in Washington Heights.” The mix of Sheila E., Black Eyed Peas, Bob Marley and others makes this posting and her site an absolute mystery, one that might be interesting to unfurl.

Lakshmi Ghandi’s Blog

Inwoodite Lakshmi Ghandi is a journalist interested in various subjects, people and trends, with a leaning toward reporting on Southeast Asian culture. Blogging since 2007, this site is a an amalgam of pop and political culture and a strong resource for keeping up with  news tidbits that range from the profound to the absurd (recent case in point, side by side stories about Jessica Simpson complaining about having to sleep under a mosquito net in Uganda to keep from catching malaria and a write up about the documentary “Sari Stories,” a film about the lives of four child brides in southern India.

A postcard everyday from New York City

Several photo blogs in focus their cameras on the streets of New York City, but few set their lenses on Northern Manhattan. Here a photogrpaher takes a look at one of the most iconic landscapes in Washington Heights, the street step, a set of stairs that connect two streets that allow no access to motor vehicles. The steps are also one of the best forms of free exercise tools known to New Yorkers.
