Luxury “Rolls” into Inwood

by Adam Garrett-Clark

In a small used car lot on Broadway near W. 218th Street, crammed in with your everyday Hondas and Toyotas is a 1975 Rolls Royce in mint condition.

The rare gold colored, fixed head coup, Corniche model car with a cream-colored leather interior and that old car smell serendipitously found its way into Northern Manhattan recently.

Rolls RoyceRafael Velazquez the owner of 5089 Broadway Auto Sales, said he has gotten a lot of lookers since the car hit the lot about a month ago, but no one yet with enough money to buy it.

Its owner, Jack Holden of Long Island, values the Royce at $30,000 and expects to get at least $23,000 for it (he said it needs a little paint work). But he doesn’t expect it to sell from the Inwood lot, he said, planning to get an ad up on e-bay.com soon.

Over the phone Holden explained that the car had been sitting in storage in Hastings-on-Hudson for the last three years, unused. With 75,000 miles on it Velasquez, a friend of Holden’s wonders if Holden drove it more than 300 miles the whole time he had it.

Holden said recently losing his storage facility motivated him to dust off the classic car and put it up for sale.

“I did my Sunday drives with it,” he said describing his time with the car. “You know, you just get in it and drive and watch all the people look at you.”

Figuring it was time to cut down on his car collection, which includes a few Mercedes and a Cadillac Allante convertible, Holden moved the car to Velazquez’s lot, temporarily.

He bought the car on e-bay.com about ten years ago and plans to put it back on the Web site soon, he said. “That’s the best way to market these rare and unusual cars,” he said.
