Hundreds join 11-mile march along Broadway to Occupy Wall Street

Northern Manhattan came out to show its support of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement this past Monday morning, as hundreds gathered on the corner of West 181st Street and St. Nicholas Avenue.

El Alto Manhattan salió a mostrar su apoyo al movimiento de Ocupar Wall Street (OWS), este pasado lunes por la mañana, cuando cientos de personas se reunieron en la esquina de la calle 181 y la Avenida St. Nicholas.


A new reverend makes the Palace home

Rev. Jack, as he is known to congregants, is 39 years old, and in his first year at the United Palace, he has started programs for seniors and for children, and is committed to community partnerships. “Something is happening. I won’t try to put it into words. I’m just going to let it happen,” he said, during the service.

In a service with gospel songs, a Southern Baptist sermon, African drumming and a shamanic journey to another world, the United Palace Cathedral welcomed its new pastor, Rev. Jack. L. Bomar this past Sun., Oct. 30th.

El Reverendo Jack, como es conocido por los feligreses, tiene 39 años de edad, y en su primer año en el United Palace, ha comenzado programas para envejecientes y para niños, y está comprometido con asociaciones comunales. “Algo está sucediendo. No voy a tratar de ponerlo en palabras. Solo voy a dejar que suceda”, dijo durante el servicio.

Northern Manhattan Democrats for Change inaugurate new headquarters | Nuevas Oficinas Para Club Demócrata

The sudden snowfall on Sat., Oct. 29th did little to dampen the festive mood on Sherman Avenue. The Democratic political club, the Northern Manhattan Democrats for Change (NMDC), celebrated the opening of their new headquarters, located at 210 Sherman Avenue. Despite the unprecedented snow and the occasionally hazardous conditions it presented, the ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception drew a large crowd with well over 150 people in attendance.

New York City Councilmember Robert Jackson presents Broadway Housing Communities’ Executive Director Ellen Baxter with a $2 million dollar check that represents capital funding for construction of new affordable housing complex that will also house a children’s cultural museum. Also present were New York State Assemblymembers Herman “Denny” Farrell and Guillermo Linares, who said of Baxter,  “She’s a visionary and a fighter.”
