Ahoy! Sailboat temporary home to bridge worker

by Daniel P. Bader

Sailboat

It's not your typical sight while walking around Inwood Hill Park. Just off shore from the peninsula where Shakespeare is performed during the summer, a black and white sailboat has been anchored since Mon., Nov. 16.

With its sail furled, and protected by a tarp, "Freedom" is moored bow and stern, and twists against the ebb and flow of the tide. The boat is moored right before the water becomes shallow. It's out of the Harlem River shipping lane that rounds the top of Manhattan, but also far enough out to deter anyone without a kayak from approaching.

For the curious, the boat has not been abandoned, nor is it moored for nefarious deeds.

According to a Coast Guard spokesperson, “Freedom” is owned by a construction worker making repairs to the Broadway Bridge, which connects Inwood to Marble Hill. The spokesperson couldn't say if the boat was allowed to be kept where it is, but so far there are no parking tickets on its windshield.

The Manhattan Times is the bilingual newspaper of Washington Heights and Inwood.
