If women made up 50 percent of Congress, the DREAM Act would have passed long ago. America wouldn’t be embroiled in wars with Iraq and Afghanistan.

When my mother spoke to my teacher during parent-teacher conferences, her priority was whether I had behaved, had been respectful, and had obeyed the teacher. Once the teacher assured her that I had indeed been a good girl, then my mother would settle down to hear about my grades in reading, math and science.

Yovanna’s newborn infant Charlie needs frequent changing.
In her neighborhood, a box of 24 diapers costs $18. And they only last two days.

Ronald Sterling was breaking a sweat.
Impeccably dressed in white trousers and a pressed white shirt, his forehead was starting to shine a bit with the tell-tale signs of perspiration.

I'd like super powers. In a time when more is demanded of us all, when our phones' IQ seems to outpace our own, and we measure minutes like drags of oxygen, who wouldn't want to level the playing field with a secret ability to read minds, or run awfully fast?

Cloves of garlic, lemon, honey and Vicksvaporub, were some of the home remedies used this week to fight a cold.
“Ponte el ‘vicvaporu’; it will make it all better.”
Those were abuela’s directions this week when I told her I was coming down with the flu. Back home, and in El Alto, the home remedy choices are endless, smelly, and not always particularly tasty.

November 7 – November 12
I cannot overstate how proud I am of Uptown for taking part in large numbers in the End to End March for the 99% on Monday, November 7th. For 7 hours and 11 miles we marched, chanted and sang all the way from Washington Heights to Wall Street. There we were; the young, the old, Black, Latino, White, Asian and everything in between. United, determined and empowered with the belief that America’s best days are still in front of her. Democracy is on the move.
