The plucky video rental store on Pinehurst Avenue near W. 181st Street is calling it quits at the end of December, exhausted after fighting the economic downturn over the last year that slowed customer traffic.

Besides being the only video store in the Hudson Heights neighborhood, Kappy-Cua had one of the deepest inventories around - 20,000 titles - boasting hard to find foreign and classic fare, as well as the latest blockbusters. The shelves of DVD and VHS tapes are for sale and must go before owners Wanda Suazo and Lisa Lackey hand in their keys on Dec. 31.

A downcast Lackey, reached by phone at the store on Tuesday, thanked her customers for years of service - both the ones who have shopped there since 2007 when she bought the store and the ones who have been coming for 25 years - since the business mainly sold records and music equipment and was located at W. 187th Street and Broadway. Present store manager Paul Galdames has been with the business since then.

Kappy-Cua Video is the second mom and pop business to close on the block in recent months after long-time anchor Jesse's Place shut its door in September. In both cases the landlord is Edel Family Management.
