SCA Capital Budget hearing date moved

The date for a Department of Education hearing discussed in City Council Member Robert Jackson’s opinion piece published in last week’s paper (“If our school aren’t overcrowded why don’t they have art rooms?” May 7, 2009) has been changed. The new date is May 21 at 3 p.m.

 
Rancho Jubilee owner due back in court on June 9

Rolando Lantigua Jr., the Northern Manhattan business owner accused of failing to pay $309,299 in taxes for the restaurant Rancho Jubilee, will be back in court on June 9 for trial.

In March, District Attorney Robert Morgenthau indicted Lantigua for failing to report 80 percent of the earnings of the restaurant between 2004 and 2008. Lantigua, who was arrested on March 4, faces a charge of Grand Larceny in the second degree, a class C Felony. He is also owner of Hispaniola restaurant and Fumee cigar shop. Those establishments have not been mentioned in the charges.

After his arrest, Lantigua posted $150,000 in bail and surrendered his passport, and was due in court on March 30. According to Morgenthau’s office, that hearing was adjourned until the June 9 date.

 
Riverside Oval Association to hold art installation on Saturday

The Riverside Oval Association in collaboration with recent graduates of Columbia University’s Landscape Design Program will hang Audubon bird prints, a chalk mural and poster board with student project images in Payan Park on W. 157th Street and Broadway on Sat., May 16. The installation is in honor of John James Audubon and Dominican activist Ilka Tanya Payan. The event will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

The event is funded by a grant from Citizens Committee for New York City as part of their Love My Block Contest for which the association, along with 11 other groups, won a $1,000 prize. Saturday’s installation will be judged for the chance to win a $3,000 prize.

 
Audubon Reform Democratic Club establishes scholarship honoring former City Council Member Stan Michels

The Audubon Reform Democratic Club announced the establishment of a scholarship fund honoring the late City Council Member Stanley E. Michels on Sun., May 3.

Michels served in the Council from 1978 through 2001 representing West Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood and Marble Hill. Among his legislative achievements was sponsoring the Clean Indoor Air Act, the city’s first law regulating smoking in public places, and helping to enact Local Law 1 of 1982, also known as the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Act. Stanley was a staunch tenant’s advocate and regularly represented tenant’s groups in Civil Court. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating student from Gregorio Luperon High School.

 
Tables available for June 6 Dyckman Flea Market and Fish Fry

Ventures offers cruise up the Hudson River to West Point

Ventures the YM/YWHA baby boomer Day Trippers program is sponsoring a trip up the Hudson River to West Point Academy to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the river. On June 7 the Ventures crew will sail with a parade of tall ships up the river from Haverstraw, NY.
