Guilty pleasures, motherhood, city living, sensuality, war, and culture are some of the topics explored in “Women in the Heights-Perspectives,” the latest exhibition mounted at the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) gallery.

Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, Assemblyman Guillermo Linares, and State Senator Adriano Espaillat, met with City agencies the morning of Feb. 22nd. After evacuating the families of 552 Academy Street, City agencies have ruled that repairs could take up to two years, and that tenants will not be allowed to move back in.
Families who were evacuated from a long neglected building at 552 Academy Street have been temporarily relocated to a YMCA on 63rd street, while others took shelter with friends and family members.

City Council Member Robert Jackson, joined by 200 other protesters, led a rally against Governor Andrew Cuomo’s planned $1.5 billion budget cuts to education on Feb. 19 in Albany. As the lead plaintiff in the successful Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit filed in 1993, Jackson argued that the funding cuts will take back the money that was promised to city schools. To reduce education cuts Jackson and protesters urged Cuomo to reverse tax breaks on the richest New Yorkers.
The Michael J. Buczeck Little League was named in memory of Police Offices Michael J. Buczek who was killed while on duty in 1988. The little league’s goal is to keep children busy after school and on weekends in an effort to keep them off the streets.
The children will learn baseball, responsibility, commitment and the dangers of crime and drugs while creating a bond with the community they live in. The teams are coached by local police officers from the 34th Precinct and local residents.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Feb. 17 that State Senator Adriano Espaillat would be among the members of his Minority and Women Owned Enterprise (MWBE) Team, which will explore ways to expand Minority and women owned business in New York State.

The Washington Heights Wildcats football team, which made the playoffs in its first season, has expanded from one to three teams for the 2011 season.

Traffic and parking will be restricted on Ft. Washington Avenue between W. 168th Street and Ft. Tryon Park on Sun., March 6 from midnight to noon in order to prepare for the 13th annual Coogan’s Salsa, Blues and Shamrocks 5K Run.
The Tierra Direct Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) group in Washington Heights will host a "Farmer Meet and Greet" on March 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Columbia Community Partnership for Health at 390 Fort Washington Avenue near W. 177th Street. The event provides the opportunity for Northern Manhattanites to learn about the CSA and ask questions of vegetable farmer Pedro Rodriguez.

CB12 votes to support amendment requiring taxis to be wheelchair accessible
The full board backed a resolution by CB12’s Traffic and Transportation Committee in support of amending a local law that would require all TLC taxis to be accessible to wheelchair users.
