For the last year the Manhattan Times has published the column Living El Alto. Our newspaper’s objective is to share The Heights; what it means to live here, to breathe here, to play here. After twelve years of publishing this newspaper, I have come to the conclusion that the column could have been called Living El Auto.

Durante el último año el Manhattan Times ha publicado la columna Viviendo El Alto. El objetivo de nuestro periódico es el compartir ‘The Heights’; lo que significa vivir aquí, respirar aquí, jugar aquí. Luego de doce años de publicar este periódico, he llegado a la conclusión que la columna podría haber sido llamada Viviendo El Auto.

“Let me ask my father; maybe if he takes us?”

My poor friend Olymar only wanted to make this work. It wasn’t her fault that my mother and father were, well, cabezas duras.

“Déjame preguntarle a mi padre; ¿a lo mejor si el nos lleva?”

Mi pobre amiga Olymar solo deseaba que esto funcionara. No era su culpa de que mi madre y mi padre fueran cabezas duras.

Ella ofreció esta solución mientras yo escuchaba en el teléfono, acurrucada en el piso del dormitorio de nuestro apartamento en Inwood. Ella estaba lejos de El Alto, en su propio Heights: Jackson Heights, Queens, pero muy bien podría haber estado a mi lado, tan desalentada en solidaridad como estaba.

Even as a boy, during this time of year, my body is alerted to the arrival of the holiday season. I am not speaking of a hallucination or of something so physical. What I mean is a feeling that pierces deeply within me and causes me immense joy. It is a feeling that provokes a smile, a cascade of love. It can arrive at any time, but always before the 31st of December. Sometimes it even skips a year. And if it does not arrive, my life follows its due course, and I continue being who I am.

Desde chico durante esta temporada, mi cuerpo recibe la alerta de que llegó la época festiva.  No estamos hablando de una alucinación ni de algo concreto.  Me refiero a un sentimiento que cala muy dentro de mí y que causa una alegría inmensa.  Es un sentimiento que estimula una sonrisa, una cascada de amor.  Puede llegar en cualquier momento pero siempre antes del 31 de diciembre, o simplemente puede saltar un año.  Si no llega, mi vida sigue su rumbo y sigo siendo quien soy; pero cuando llega, por ese minuto, o día o semana, ando por las nubes.  Cosas que regularmente me molestarían, me resbalan.  Y recibo un empujón de energía adicional.

It was only last week I was writing about my first year in El Alto. This week I write to say “hasta pronto,” a see-you-later, not to be confused with a goodbye.

Sólo esta misma semana pasada estaba escribiendo acerca de mi primer año en El Alto. Y esta semana escribo para decir "hasta pronto", un nos-vemos más-tarde, que no debe ser confundido con un adiós.

Cloves of garlic, lemon, honey and Vicksvaporub, were some of the home remedies used this week to fight a cold.

“Ponte el ‘vicvaporu’; it will make it all better.”

Those were abuela’s directions this week when I told her I was coming down with the flu. Back home, and in El Alto, the home remedy choices are endless, smelly, and not always particularly tasty.

“Ponte el ‘vicvaporu’, pa’ que te mejores.”

Esas fueron las instrucciones de la abuela esta semana, cuando le dije que me estaba dando gripa. En casa, y en El Alto, las opciones de remedios caseros son infinitas, a veces huelen mal, y no siempre son sabrosas.
