The kickoff event for newly formed nonprofit Friends of P.S./I.S. 187 was a Jan. 26 gala that attracted close to $12,000 and about 150 attendees, who feted City Council Member Robert Jackson, holding award in photo above.

Community Board 12 has given its support for a full liquor license to Washington Heights Billiards, a 17-table pool hall and restaurant on W. 207th Street between Nagle and Post Avenues.

Mayor launches $avenyc Account

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Linda I. Gibbs and Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jonathan Mintz announced on Jan. 27 the launch of the $aveNYC Account program, a special savings account to help low income New Yorkers make the most of their tax refund by building savings through a privately funded City matching program.

Residents air issues at town hall meeting

City Council Member Robert Jackson has pledged to fund the purchase and installation of street lights and security cameras along the northern end of Cabrini Boulevard, which is bordered by parkland and the back side of Mother Cabrini Shrine and High School, creating a lonely stretch that is usually more densely populated by parked cars than pedestrians.

Man shot on Academy Street, police search for gunman

Police are searching for the man who shot a Bronx man near the corner of Academy and Sherman Avenues on Sat., Jan. 24 at 5:25 a.m. Despite being shot four or five times, the victim was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and is expected to survive.
