“Poetry in Steel,” author writes first full history of the George Washington Bridge

This wasn’t quite what he had in mind, thought author Michael Aaron Rockland, clinging to the massive curved, blandly named Barrel Cable C of the George Washington Bridge. To one side, unimaginably far down, was placid but uninviting Hudson River. On the other, almost equally far down, traffic sped in both directions. Wearing a harness, and clipped to one of four accompanying officers of the bridge’s Emergency Services Unit, he trudged up the cable, which ends in a 44-degree angle at the top of the tower, giving him the experience of walking straight up into the sky. . “If I don’t die,” Rockland told himself, “this’ll be great material for my book.”

Mamajuana group to purchase Dyckman Deli

This spring Dyckman Deli at the corner of Seaman Avenue will be converted into a new Mamajuana restaurant, owners of both establishments confirmed this week. Jihad Ammar, who has owned Dyckman Deli for nine years, said that he approached the owners of Mamajuana with a proposal to sell the remainder of his lease of three and a half years to the restaurant group. The two are now in negotiations with the site’s management company to transfer the lease to make way for a new Mamajuana restaurant venture, which would be the third in a two-block stretch of Dyckman Street just west of Broadway.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20, off to the side of the big screen in the Winter Garden of Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, Naveen Bhora watched President Barack Obama take the oath of office. Her son, Mir, just a month old, is a patient at the hospital.

Golden Festival continues to sparkle

Over 1,500 music enthusiasts made their way to Good Shepard School on Isham Street in Inwood for the 24th Annual Golden Festival on Fri. and Sat. Jan. 16  and 17. Sponsored by the Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band, the two-day event with over 40 bands is an annual celebration of the culture of the Balkans, a region of southeastern Europe.

Anny Castillo has known Northern Manhattan needs a children’s hair salon ever since her son Alexander was born three years ago this March. She felt uncomfortable taking him to local barber shops, which didn’t have play areas, and hated going downtown.
