Nine days after voters picked Assembly Member Adriano Espaillat to represent them in the State Senate seat being vacated by Eric Schneiderman he met with his three former opponents to discuss issues raised during the campaign and tap their expertise in how to solve the district’s most intractable problems.

The Sat., Sep. 4 issue of The New York Times published its endorsement of Assembly Member Adriano Espaillat in the race to replace Eric Schneiderman in the 31st State Senate District, calling him "an outspoken voice for the most crucial reform of all — an independent redistricting commission to create fairer elections in the state."

When current state Senator Eric Schneiderman decided to run for attorney general, it provided the first vacancy in the 31st Senate District, which stretches from the Upper West Side through Washington Heights and Inwood to Riverdale in the Bronx, since 1998. The four Democratic candidates running to succeed Schneiderman are Adriano Espaillat, Mark Levine, Anna Lewis and Miosotis Muñoz.
In the waning days before the Sep. 14 Democratic primary, the Manhattan Times caught up with the front runners Espaillat and Levine while they campaigned.
In the Sep. 8 issue the Manhattan Times will publish bios of all the candidates in the local races.

What was a six-person field of candidates for state Senate has been whittled to four as Francesca Castellanos, a perennial candidate for elected office, and Rafael Figuereo did not survive the petitioning process to get their names on the Sep. 14 Democratic primary ballot.
