At December’s CB12 Housing and Human Services Committee meeting, guest speaker Leah Donaldson, the Manhattan Borough Liaison for New York City Department of Buildings (DOB), offered the committee an update on vacated buildings in the area in 2011, and also a presentation on Emergency Declarations v. Immediate Emergency Declarations.

En la reunión de diciembre del Comité de Vivienda y Servicios Humanos de CB12, el orador invitado Leah Donaldson, el enlace del condado de Manhattan del Departamento de Edificios (DOB, por sus siglas en inglés) de la ciudad de Nueva York, le ofreció al comité una actualización de edificios vacíos en el área en el 2011, y también una presentación de Declaraciones de Emergencia v. Declaraciones de Emergencias Inmediatas. El presidente del comité, George Fernández, expresó una preocupación por parte de los residentes que han sido sacados de sus apartamentos y no han podido regresar a ellos.
Oscar Abreu has opened a new fine art gallery space on Broadway. “I started this gallery to provide answers to the same questions I asked myself as a young man,” he says. Much of Abreu’s paintings have an autobiographical cast. This painting is one, inadvertently, he says of his sister, who perished on Flight 587. “Your greatest memories are those that impacted you with [real] emotion.”

Las históricas mujeres afro-americanas estuvieron en exhibición este pasado viernes, 2 de diciembre en “Freedom’s Sisters”, una nueva exhibición ambulante en el Monumento y Centro Educativo Malcolm X y Dra. Betty Shabazz.

Even as a boy, during this time of year, my body is alerted to the arrival of the holiday season. I am not speaking of a hallucination or of something so physical. What I mean is a feeling that pierces deeply within me and causes me immense joy. It is a feeling that provokes a smile, a cascade of love. It can arrive at any time, but always before the 31st of December. Sometimes it even skips a year. And if it does not arrive, my life follows its due course, and I continue being who I am.

Desde chico durante esta temporada, mi cuerpo recibe la alerta de que llegó la época festiva. No estamos hablando de una alucinación ni de algo concreto. Me refiero a un sentimiento que cala muy dentro de mí y que causa una alegría inmensa. Es un sentimiento que estimula una sonrisa, una cascada de amor. Puede llegar en cualquier momento pero siempre antes del 31 de diciembre, o simplemente puede saltar un año. Si no llega, mi vida sigue su rumbo y sigo siendo quien soy; pero cuando llega, por ese minuto, o día o semana, ando por las nubes. Cosas que regularmente me molestarían, me resbalan. Y recibo un empujón de energía adicional.

We began the week with a new column entitled Uptown Poetry, which pairs a piece of verse with a photograph. For the inaugural installment we featured a moving poem about love and longing by Stacey Sosa entitled I Swear I’m Not A Love Poet with a photograph from the one and only Paul Lomax that captured the sentiment of the poem perfectly. It was at the WHIN Arts Showcase that took place on November 26th at Word Up Books, that I saw the young and talented Stacey Sosa perform that piece.
