Neighborhood Blogwatch

by Carla Zanoni

Much has been written about the artistic revolution occurring in Northern Manhattan. Photographers, writers, painters, sculptors and all sorts of other artists are joining the already thriving community of musicians living in the area. Too big to be contained that energy is flowing from the streets of Washington Heights and Inwood to the virtual world via social media like Twitter, Facebook and Flickr, online markets like Etsy, and, of course, blogs. Here’s just a taste.

Hey Yourself

My Journey into Illustrationdom!

Whitney Gardner is a fifth grade teacher who writes that she is on her way “to making and illustrating children's books. I draw, cut, paste, paint, mark, stamp, glue, dance, and play the ukulele.” Her site is a collection of some of the most adorable, humorous and charming illustrations she’s worked on over the past year in hopes of becoming a “known illustrator.” Get to know her here.

Inwood resident Christopher Camp is a self-described audio video and photography specialist. He makes “analog beats.” Equal parts hip hop fan club and popular culture blog, Camp keeps readers up-to-date on the most interesting sounds and images he comes across in his every day life, offering an expanded view of music and art for readers.

New York Minutes

Although it’s not clear where Lady Holiday, the writer of this blog, lives it’s certain she has had a connection to Inwood for at least two years, spending several holidays up north. A “thinker, dreamer, lover of all good things” is also a talented artist and creator. Check out her lovely recent Thanksgiving post up in Inwood and make sure to venture over to her Etsy shop for lovely items for sale. I won’t say who is receiving a little something from her shop from me for the holidays, but I will say the Gingko items for sale are reminiscent of the great Ginkgo tree in Inwood’s Isham Park. Perhaps the inspiration came from our little enclave?
