Neighborhood Blogwatch

by Carla Zanoni

If one were to judge who lives in Washington Heights and Inwood solely on a quick survey of neighborhood blogs, it would be easy to ignore the thriving Hispanic culture in who live full and interesting lives above W. 155th Street. A burgeoning online life is beginning to unfold, both on traditional blogs and microblogs like Twitter. Young people and not so young are logging on and writing about their experiences uptown and though the sites are rarely written in Spanish, the experiences here are flavored by the international background and flavor the writers’ ancestry has provided them.

Eleni Bourinaris grew up in Washington Heights and is now a Peace Corp volunteer working in her native Dominican Republic. This site speaks about her travels and varied experiences, but it is clear that many of her insights are ingrained in her from her experiences as a New York City kid growing up in what she calls “Little DR.”

Washington Heights is home to many Hispanic people who hail from as varied cultures as Argentina and Mexico to Peru and the Dominican Republic. This blog takes a look at the lives of Cubans living in New York City and in this post, takes a stab at the most important topic of Latino food, specifically how to make traditional Cuban flan with traditional Dominican ingredients, creating their “Flan de Leche a la Cubana” recipe (with a few adjustments in honor of our Dominican neighbors here in Washington Heights, Nueba Yol (aka, Nueva York, aka, New York).”

klevosky

For those who do speak Spanish, “klevosky” is a blog written by a Dominican man living in Washington Heights. His site is a mishmash of random musings about life and his loves: food, his family and machista humor. Some of it, one hopes, is written with an ironic slat, but one never knows. For those who do not speak Spanish, Google Translate has a nifty tool that lets you translate from one language to another. Visit the second link to read “klevosky” in English if need be, although most of the jokes will certainly be lost in translation.
