Local residents gathered in Inwood Hill Park for a a Native American sweat lodge ceremony, the first of its kind in recent memory. According to Luis Iukibuel Ramos, the event organizer, a sweat lodge performs many functions, including serving as a form of medicine that purifies the body and soul.

At my school if a student is absent more than 20 days their promotion is in doubt. This is a very generous policy because twenty days amounts to a whole month of school that has been missed. A lot of learning lost.

Livery industry leaders gathered this past Sun., Dec. 11th, in midtown to announce a plan of “10 Days of Action,” a series of demonstrations over the next week intended to persuade Governor Cuomo to sign the livery bill that would legalize street hails.

Rallying in 30-degree temperatures this past Sun., Dec. 11th, over 100 drivers and base owners from the Bronx and northern Manhattan, and from all over the city, called on Governor Cuomo to sign the livery bill sent to him this past Friday by the New York State Legislature.

Este pasado domingo 11 de diciembre, protestando en una temperatura en los 30s, más de 100 chóferes y dueños de bases del Bronx, el Norte de Manhattan y toda la ciudad, le hicieron un llamado al Gobernador Cuomo para que firmara la legislación que recibió de la Legislatura del estado de Nueva York este pasado viernes. Esta pieza legislativa, aprobada abrumadoramente por legisladores tanto demócratas como republicanos, les permitiría a los chóferes – por primera vez en la historia de la industria – recoger pasajeros en las calles que no sean en el centro de Manhattan.

My poor friend Olymar only wanted to make this work. It wasn’t her fault that my mother and father were, well, cabezas duras.
“Déjame preguntarle a mi padre; ¿a lo mejor si el nos lleva?”
Mi pobre amiga Olymar solo deseaba que esto funcionara. No era su culpa de que mi madre y mi padre fueran cabezas duras.
Ella ofreció esta solución mientras yo escuchaba en el teléfono, acurrucada en el piso del dormitorio de nuestro apartamento en Inwood. Ella estaba lejos de El Alto, en su propio Heights: Jackson Heights, Queens, pero muy bien podría haber estado a mi lado, tan desalentada en solidaridad como estaba.

Kudos to Brazen for taking part in the annual NY Cares Coat Drive. You know the motto by now, “spread love it’s the Uptown way.”
