A ceremonial groundbreaking with Mayor Michael Bloomberg was held for the new Sugar Hill development in West Harlem.
The Sugar Hill neighborhood of northern Manhattan just got a little sweeter.
This past Thurs., July 19th, community leaders, residents and elected officials broke ground on what was once a parking lot on 155th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue to make way for the construction of 124 units of affordable housing, as well as the establishment of a children’s museum and educational center in West Harlem.
The Sugar Hill development’s design will be led by celebrated architect David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates together with SLCE Architects.
The residential complex is part of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s New Housing Marketplace Plan (NHMP), a multi-billion dollar initiative to finance 165,000 units of affordable housing for half a million New Yorkers by the close of Fiscal Year 2014.
On Thursday, Mayor Bloomberg announced the initiative was 85% complete.

El comisionado del ‘Department of Housing Preservation and Development’ Mathew M. Wambua expresó, “Vivienda como ésta fortalece a las comunidades y cambia las vidas.”
El vecindario de Sugar Hill de Manhattan norte acaba de tornarse más dulce.
Este pasado jueves 19, líderes comunitarios, residentes y oficiales electos dieron el picazo en lo que otrora fue un estacionamiento en la calle 155 y la Avenida San Nicolas, para dar paso a la construcción de 124 unidades de vivienda asequible, así como al establecimiento de un museo infantil y centro educativo en West Harlem.
El diseño del proyecto Sugar Hill estará dirigido por el célebre arquitecto David Adjaye, de Adjaye Associates conjuntamente con SLCE Architects.
El complejo residencial forma parte del New Housing Marketplace Plan (NHMP), la multi-billonaria iniciativa del Alcalde Michael R. Bloomberg, para financiar 165 unidades de vivienda asequible para medio millón de neoyorquinos, para el cierre del año fiscal 2014.
El jueves, el Alcalde Bloomberg anunció que la iniciativa estaba completa en un 85%.

"This is for the interest of all low wage workers in all of the country," said Ana Maria Archilas, Co-Executive Director of Make the Road NY.
Ediberto has been working as a car wash worker for the past 15 years.
He has no health benefits, and says he sometimes he must choose to work over his
health.
“I continue to work in the hope of a better future,” said Ediberto. “I have worked in different car washes and they all treat us in the same manner.”
The conditions described are bleak.
“They pay us $5.50 an hour; sometimes they send us home without pay because it’s raining and if we break something, it comes out of our check.”
Ediberto is not alone.

La Congresista Nydia Velazquez denunció los bajo salarios pagados a muchos trabajadores a través de la ciudad. “Todavía tenemos uno de los promedios de pobreza más altos en nuestra nación”, dijo ella.
Ediberto ha estado trabajando como empleado de lavar autos por los pasados 15 años.
No tiene beneficios de salud, y dice que algunas veces tiene que escoger entre el trabajar o su salud.
“Continuo trabajando con la esperanza de un mejor futuro”, dijo Ediberto. “He trabajado en diferentes lavados de autos y todos nos tratan de la misma manera”.
Las condiciones descritas son sombrías.
“Nos pagan $5.50 la hora; algunas veces nos envían a la casa sin pagarnos porque está lloviendo y si rompemos algo, sale de nuestro cheque”.
Ediberto no está sólo.

Councilmember Robert Jackson said he was against the proposed ban that would prohibit the sale of sugary drinks over 16 ounces. “I will be going down to City Hall and giving testament [for] my constituents.”
New York City Councilmember Robert Jackson has come out against the soda ban proposed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Earlies this summer, Mayor Bloomberg proposed a ban on the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces in an effort to combat the obesity epidemic.
Although City Councilmembers have no legislative say in the matter, as it is a mandate proposed directly to the City’s New York Health Department by the administration, Councilmember Jackson, together with many of his colleagues, have been vocal in opposition and said he would insist on testifying against the ban.
Councilmember Jackson canvassed his district late on Thurs., July 19th together with the New Yorkers for Beverage Choices Coalition (NYBCC) to find out what business owners who would be affected knew about the ban.

El Concejal Robert Jackson hizo una gira para encontrar que los dueños de negocios que serían afectados supieran sobre la prohibición.
El Concejal Robert Jackson está contra la prohibición de soda propuesta por el Alcalde Michael Bloomberg.
A principios del verano, el Alcalde Bloomberg propuso una prohibición de la venta de bebidas azucaradas mayores de 16 onzas en un esfuerzo de combatir la epidemia de obesidad.
Aunque los miembros del Concejo no tienen voz legislativa en el asunto, ya que es un mandato propuesto directamente por el Departamento de Salud de la ciudad de Nueva York, el Concejal Jackson, junto a muchos de sus colegas, ha sido vocal en la oposición y dijo que insistirá en testificar contra la prohibición.

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it has had a good alibi since last November.
The Curiosity, NASA’s newest Mars rover, has been traveling to the Red Planet since its Thanksgiving launch and is scheduled to land at 10:30 a.m. on Sun., Aug. 5th.
Mars is 354 million miles away.
The Curiosity’s seven-month trip culminates in a dramatic seven minute descent to Mars’ surface. In those critical minutes, it must reach a full stop after entering the atmosphere at 13,000 miles per hour.
In the final seconds before landing, the Curiosity’s spacecraft will function as a sky crane as it hovers to suspend and lower the rover to Mars’ surface.
But intrepid residents only had to take a simple trip to Inwood this Saturday to learn about the Curiosity’s Martian mission.
Over twenty people, including families with children, gathered in the basement of the New York Public Library’s Inwood branch to hear from Jason Kendall, NASA’s ambassador to New York City.

La familia Phelan Ana vino desde Clinton Hill en Brooklyn para el evento.

Puede ser que la curiosidad haya matado al gato, pero a partir de diciembre, esta ha tenido una buena coartada. The Curiosity, el último vehículo explorador de Marte, ha estado viajando al Planeta Rojo desde su lanzamiento el Día de Acción de Gracias, y está programado para descender el 5 de agosto a las 10:30 a.m.
Marte está a 354 millones de millas de distancia. El viaje de siete meses de Curiosity, culmina en un dramático descenso de siete minutos a la superficie de Marte. En esos minutos, este debe lograr detenerse completamente luego de ingresar a la atmosfera a 13,000 millas por hora. En los minutos finales antes del descenso, la nave especial Curiosity funcionará como grúa especial a medida que se desliza para suspender y bajar la nave hacia la superficie de Marte.

Having your kids join in volunteer work is an activity that is both fun and rewarding.

When my daughter was eight years old, I arranged a volunteer run to our local nursing homes on Mother’s Day with some of her classmates.
“What are we going to do?” they asked excitedly.
“You’ll see,” I replied, not yet understanding what I’d gotten us into.
After getting the sign-off from other parents, we visited the Fort Tryon and Isabella Nursing homes with a batch of individually wrapped roses.
“I’m going to give the most,” said one of the kids.
“No,” my daughter replied, “I’m gonna beat you.”
When we got there, we were escorted to another floor where the women were gathered together. Each facility coordinated our visit so the patients with less visitors and family were together when the kids arrived.
“What do we do?” they asked nervously.
“Go!” I said. With that, each one ran to personally hand-deliver a rose to the patients.

Una campaña de carpas de limonada la cual puede beneficiar a las organizaciones locales ha sido iniciada por la Asociación de la Industria del Juguete.

Cuando mi hija tenía ocho años de edad, organicé un grupo de voluntarios para ir a nuestros hogares de enfermería locales el Día de la Madre con algunos de sus compañeros de clase.
“¿Qué vamos a hacer?”, preguntaron emocionados.
“Ya verán”, contesté, sin todavía comprender en lo que nos habíamos metido.
Cuando los otros padres asentaron, visitamos los centros Fort Tryon e Isabella con unas rosas individualmente empaquetadas.
“Voy a dar lo mejor”, dijo uno de los niños.
“No”, contestó mi hija, “yo te voy a ganar”.
Cuando llegamos, fuimos escoltados a otro piso donde las mujeres estaban reunidas. Cada facilidad coordinó nuestra visita para que los pacientes con menos visitantes y familiares estuvieran juntos cuando los niños llegaran.
“¿Qué hacemos?”, preguntaron nerviosamente.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with La Marina proprietor Jerald Tenenbaum, said, “This is like having a Caribbean beach right here in Manhattan.”
Despite the many who visited in these last weeks, La Marina had not yet “officially” opened – until this past Wed., July 18th, when the new waterfront restaurant on Dyckman welcomed guests, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Parks and Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Deputy Borough President Rosemonde Pierre-Louis, former City Comptroller William C. Thompson, among others, to a ribbon-cutting that marked a grand opening five years in the making.
While a bank of gray clouds hovered, it seemed nothing could deter the high spirits of those in attendance, who enjoyed cocktails and menu selections from Chef Pierre Landet.
“If you like food, if you like fun, this is the place to be,” said Mayor Bloomberg. “This is a spectacular view at the edge of Inwood Park, and La Marina is really going to be one of the hotspots of New York City. This is like having a Caribbean beach right here in Manhattan.”

El director de cine Luis Argueta conversará con Luis Miranda en su programa de radio satélite Portada en Inspírate, Sirius XM 145.
Luis Miranda, publisher del Manhattan Times y el Bronx Free Press, sirve de anfitrión a dos programas especiales esta semana como parte de su programa diario Portada en Inspírate, Sirius XM 145.
El miércoles 25 de julio, Miranda discutirá la redada anti-inmigrante del 2008 en Iowa con el director de cine Luis Argueta.
Argueta plasmó la realidad de la Redada de Postville en el ahora famoso documental, Abusados. El documental presenta a los agentes de inmigración descendiendo sobre la planta Agriprocessors el 12 de mayo del 2008, arrestando a 389 trabajadores ilegales, muchos de ellos de Guatemala.
El Pastor David Vázquez del Lutheran College se une a Argueta para discutir su envolvimiento luego de la redada para ayudar a los afectados y a sus familias.

Evita Perón, the charismatic wife of Argentinean President Juan Perón, will be the focus of a special program on Sirius satellite program “Portada with Luis Miranda”.
The Manhattan Times and The Bronx Free Press publisher Luis Miranda is hosting two special programs this week as part of his daily Spanish radio program, “Portada” on Inspírate, Sirius XM 145.
On Wednesday, July 25th, Miranda will discuss the 2008 Postville anti-immigrant raid in Iowa with film director Luis Argueta.
Argueta memorialized the Postville Raid in his now famous documentary, Abusados. The documentary presents immigration agents descending on the Agriprocessors, Inc. meatpacking plant on May 12, 2008 and arresting 389 workers, many of them from Guatemala.

Susan Margules Steinhardt, president of Homework Helpers, cuts a thank-you cake with summer campers at the Dyckman Community Center to which she donated 20 Dell computers.
It was Christmas in July for the Dyckman Cornerstone Community Center this past Mon., July 16th.
The community center, located at 3782 Tenth Avenue, received 20 Dell desktop computers for use by after-school, summer camp participants, and parents.
The donation by Susan Margules Steinhardt, founder and president of the non-profit organization Homework Helpers, made for a joyous morning celebration by the center’s children, administrative staff and community leaders who took little notice of the heat wave outside.
The Cornerstone Community Center, located at the foot of a housing project building, has long served as a touchstone for community activity for residents of all ages.
“This is incredible,” said Eddie Silverio Director of Youth Programs at Alianza Dominicana. “If [the kids] don’t have a computer at home, they can come downstairs and utilize these computers. These computers are also meant for parents to be able to utilize computers for what they are: a true resource.”

El centro comunitario ‘Cornerstone’ recibió 20 computadoras Dell para el uso de los participantes del programa después de la escuela,del campamento de verano, y por los padres.
Este pasado lunes 16 de julio, fue como Navidad en Julio para el Dyckman Cornerstone Community Center.
El centro comunitario, localizado en el 3782 de la Décima Avenida, recibió 20 computadoras Dell para el uso de los participantes del programa después de la escuela, del campamento de verano, y por los padres. El donativo por parte de Susan Margules Steinhardt, fundadora presidenta la organización sin-fines-de-lucro Homework Helpers, constituyó una alegre celebración mañanera para el centro infantil, el personal administrativo y para líderes comunitarios quienes poco se percataron de la ola de calor existente afuera.
El Cornerstone Community Center, localizado al pie de un edificio de proyecto de vivienda, ha servido durante largo tiempo como una actividad de punto de referencia para residentes de todas las edades.

Jose Reyes Silva was his father’s favorite child.
He, more than any of the 10 children, looked and acted most like his father.
Funny and outgoing, he charmed everyone so much that his father proclaimed, “When I die, I’m going to take you with me.”
He didn’t say it just once, according to Salvador, Jose’s older brother.
He said it all the time. When their father died in 2001, the family was a little spooked.
Those words came back to haunt the Reyes Silva family when Jose, 22, was fatally stabbed to death at the corner of 207th and Vermilyea St. in the early hours of July 5th.
Jose worked as a dishwasher and deliveryman at Grandpa’s Pizza, at 207th and Broadway. He was reportedly out with friends, celebrating the 4th of July holiday, and about to take the subway home when the incident occurred.
Two men, Jose Ortega and Juan Zarasar-Moralez, both 22, have been arrested.

José Reyes Silva, quien trabajaba en Grandpa’s Pizza en la Calle 207, fue fatalmente apuñalado a tempranas horas del 5 de julio.

José Reyes Silva era el hijo favorito de su padre. El, más que cualquiera de sus 10 hijos, se parecía y actuaba como su padre.
Divertido y extrovertido, encantaba a todo el mundo tanto que su padre proclamaba, “cuando yo muera, te voy a llevar conmigo”.
No lo dijo solo una vez, según Salvador, hermano mayor de José. Lo decía todo el tiempo. Cuando su padre murió en el 2001, la familia estaba un poco asustada.
Esas palabras regresaron para asediar a la familia Reyes Silva cuando José, de 22 años, fue fatalmente apuñalado en la esquina de la Calle 207 y Vermilyea a tempranas horas del 5 de julio. José trabajaba como lavaplatos y haciendo entregas en Grandpa’s Pizza en la Calle 207 y Broadway. Estaba con sus amigos celebrando el 4 de julio y a punto de tomar el tren a casa cuando ocurrió el incidente.
Dos hombres, José Ortega y Juan Zarasar-Moralez, ambos de 22 años, han sido arrestados. Ambos fueron acusados con asalto de primero y segundo grado. La policía continúa buscando otro sospechoso.

The doctors are making house calls.
Now, on Tuesday night, anyone can pull up a chair and visit with one of the many top-rated doctors or nurses at the Columbia and Weill Cornell campuses of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, thanks to “NY Med,” the new eight-part documentary series on ABC-TV.
Described by some as a real-life “Grey’s Anatomy,” the series, as created by veteran television producer Terence Wrong, documents some of the high drama and intimate moments that abound in the hospital’s corridors.
This past Tues., July 10th, local residents and many members of the hospital’s staff, many wearing t-shirts emblazoned with the show’s logo, gathered just a few blocks away from the hospital, at Coogan’s Restaurant, for a special premiere party.
The first episode did not disappoint, chronicling the intense trials of a young mom with a brain tumor and its removal and featuring the restoration of an older man’s heart valve by Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Los doctores están haciendo llamadas de casa.
Ahora cualquier persona puede hacerse una visita con uno de los muchos doctores y enfermeras de los dos recintos del hospital NewYork-Presbyterian, Cornell Weill y Columbia gracias a “NY Med,” la serie documental en la cadena ABC-TV.
El nuevo show de la cadena ABC, “NYMed” está siendo descrito como un “Grey’s Anatomy” de la vida real en el hospital principal de Washington Heights.
“NY Med” documenta las diarias situaciones tras bastidores en el Columbia University Medical Center, en la calle 168 y el Weill Cornell Medical Center en el Upper East Side.
El pasado martes, 10 de julio, durante una fiesta de estreno del show en Coogan’s, empleados del hospital y residentes en el vecindario se cobijaron para un primer vistazo del show.

Javier López, director de 'Strategic Alliance for Health' de la ciudad de Nueva York, también argumentó contra la prohibición. "Tenemos que trabajar con todos los establecimientos de comida al detal en términos de proveer opciones saludables".
La reciente propuesta del Alcalde Bloomberg al Departamento de Salud e Higiene de prohibir la venta de bebidas azucaradas y refrescos más grandes de 16 onzas ha tenido críticas positivas – como también un número de ataques a lo largo de la ciudad.
Localmente, en los vecindarios del Norte de Manhattan tales como East Harlem, líderes comunales están preguntando, a pesar de su objetivo de luchar contra la obesidad, si la prohibición sirve al bien común.
La Concejal de la ciudad de Nueva York Melissa Mark Viverito, junto a líderes locales y residentes, camimó las calles de su distrito este pasado miércoles, 11 de julio para hablarle a los dueños de negocios del propuesto mandato.
