A student’s report card is the official record of their academic career. Any school a student applies to, whether middle school, high school or college, will always look at the report card to measure the student.
Therefore, it is an important record for any student who wants to get into great schools.
What do schools look at when they examine a student’s report card?
Attendance: High absenteeism or tardiness is not viewed well. Often schools will reject a student because there is a history of a lot of absences or tardy. It is viewed as evidence of a lack of commitment to education. If special circumstances have caused these absences, such as an illness or a death in the family then it should be explained to the school. Such circumstances would be an exception, whereas, a pattern of high absences is not easy to explain.
Grades: High grades are important to great schools. It is evidence that the student knows how to achieve, and has the study skills necessary to succeed. One year of high grades is not enough. There needs to be several years of good grades to show that the student can maintain a high level of achievement.
Test Scores: High test scores are also important. This is evidence that the student can achieve in a high pressure environment. Getting high test scores also demonstrates that the student has acquired test taking skills which are important to his academic future. If a student has low test scores but very high grades the school may overlook the test scores because there is still evidence of high achievement over several years.
Subjects Studied: For many great schools it is important that the student has had a well- rounded education. Subjects such as art, music, a foreign language, dance, and others will show that the student can excel in subjects other than math and reading.
Teacher’s Comments: Any recommendation written by a teacher is an important indicator of a student’s future academic success. Therefore, a teacher’s comments are closely reviewed to assess a student’s potential.
In these weeks when teachers will be meeting with parents to review student report card, it would be good for both parents and student to be aware of how important this record is. I hope your child has an exemplary report card.

March 12 – March 17
We started the week with really great news; the Harvest Dome 2.0 project will now become a reality. This wonderful and thought-provoking project recently reached its Kickstarter Goal of $7,500. Harvest Dome 2.0 will be a floating installation for the Inwood Hill Park Inlet that innovatively calls attention to New York City’s waterways and watersheds.
The good folks at Le Chéile (839 W 181st St @ Cabrini Boulevard) held an all-you-can-eat cereal buffet on Saturday, March 10th to benefit our beloved neighborhood bookstore, Word Up Books. Stop by the site and take a gander at the pictures to see what community and fraternity looks like. Much love goes to Le Chéile co-owner, Dave Hollander, for hosting this wonderful event at his awesome space.
