For Inwood resident Carla Hansen, vintage linens, traditional embroidery stitches and snarky or unexpected sayings are a perfect combination.

“I find the contrast of rock lyrics and this old-school style to be really amusing,” Hansen said. “And it turned out that other people think so, too.”

When current state Senator Eric Schneiderman decided to run for attorney general, it provided the first vacancy in the 31st Senate District, which stretches from the Upper West Side through Washington Heights and Inwood to Riverdale in the Bronx, since 1998. The four Democratic candidates running to succeed Schneiderman are Adriano Espaillat, Mark Levine, Anna Lewis and Miosotis Muñoz.

In the waning days before the Sep. 14 Democratic primary, the Manhattan Times caught up with the front runners Espaillat and Levine while they campaigned.

In the Sep. 8 issue the Manhattan Times will publish bios of all the candidates in the local races.

Alexandra Wang has a book that holds 2,000 years of her family’s history. Between its red covers are the names of her ancestors dating back to the Han Dynasty, at roughly the same time the Roman Empire conquered England. But the book is a mystery to Alex, who lives in Washington Heights, because she can’t read Chinese – at least not yet.

Voting on a new machine

It’s about as simple as voting can get. The Board of Elections has been touring Northern Manhattan for the last week demonstrating its new voting machines, which are essentially computer scanners that read a paper ballot that voters fill out.

The Audubon Partnership for Economic Development is selling their "Off the Map" t-shirts at their office on Post Avenue and in stores throughout Inwood.

Call it a protest. Call it a jab at the rest of Manhattan. Call it pride in the neighborhood. Call it the latest neighborhood t-shirt to hit Northern Manhattan.

near-record heat and lower than average rainfall has threatened the
city’s street trees, which rely on rainfall for the bulk of their
water. The Parks Department is encouraging the community to adopt a

It’s a sunny hot day on Academy Street in Inwood. Heat radiates up from the pavement and down from the sun above, the only relief is from small pools of shade cast onto the sidewalks planted this spring through the city’s MillionTrees program.

The Board of Elections is touring the neighborhood to demonstrate the new voting machines.

A dozen or so seniors waiting for a demonstration of the new voting machines at the Ayudath Israel of America Moriah Older Adult Luncheon Club on Bennett Avenue were stood up by the Board of Elections on Wed., Aug. 18 without an explanation.

Following tornado-force winds from a July 25 storm the Parks Department has removed several trees and stumps from Bruce's Garden near Isham Park. PHOTO: Orubba Almansouri

It’s a little hotter in Bruce’s Garden these days. High winds from the July 25 F1 tornado that touched down in the Riverdale community in the Bronx damaged half a dozen trees in the Park Terrace East memorial garden, one of which fell and took out five smaller trees, including two cherry trees.

The NYPD released the above video of three males believed to have staged a home invasion robbery on W. 176th Street in July, the second one within a week in the immediate area.

This week the NYPD released information about a Fri., July 23 robbery where victims were tied up in their home near W. 176th Street and Wadsworth Avenue that was less than a week after a similar crime took place several blocks away.
