A community as complex and vibrant as ours expects and requires many things from an elementary school education.
Well-trained, creative, caring, and dedicated teachers and administrators are a must. An engaging and rigorous curriculum that meets the diverse needs of students is also essential. A school environment that welcomes and recognizes the contributions of families from a broad range of cultures and backgrounds is critical. And one of the most fundamental requirements, particularly of early grade education, is the ability to nurture a love of learning and encourage critical thinking.

Artist Peter Bulow, whose latest works are displayed together in Fort Tryon Park in an exhibition titled "Passing Glances," is also a psychiatrist.
The seductive power of Fort Tryon Park is at its peak.
The combination of warm weather, bird songs, the scent of flowers blooming colors are a rare delight for city-dwellers' senses.
But this spring, there are thirteen new reasons to visit the park.
"Passing Glances" is a recently installed sculpture exhibit in the Park that warrants a visit longer than its name suggest.
Created by Washington Heights artist Peter Bulow, this baker's dozen of busts lines the Stan Michaels Promenade, just off the park's main entrance at 191st Street.
The exhibit captures New York's phenomenal diversity.

Attendees of the ACDP's first Teen Expo were young women who engaged in direct dialogue with workshop leaders and panelists.
After reading the 2010 Community Service Society report 2010 on trends amongst New York City Latino youths in Education, Work and Income, Soledad Hiciano, Executive Director of the Community Association of Progressive Dominicans (ACDP), was alarmed by the high number of dropout rates for young Latinos.
"I knew things were bad, but I didn't know how bad," said Hiciano.
The data became a catalyst for a project that came to fruition this Sat., April 14th at Gregorio Luperón High School, where the first ACDP Teen Expo was held for young women.
Noticing a feeling of disconnection to a school system that Hiciano said has "been challenged drastically" in recent years, she came to believe that many students are discontent with their school environment and feeling isolated.
"Today, [the Expo] was about sending a different kind of message, a message of resistance," she said.
