The self-taught visual artist is inspired by many of her travels. Here, she sits before a series inspired by Old World architecture. "I think the struggle of women and the survival spirit is universal," said Arroyo.
Walk into the studio on 158th and Broadway, and you will find that the walls are minimally adorned and pale.
Just when you've begun to wonder whether it is true that artist lives here, one quick right turn, and your eyes are ablaze with bold colors.
Reds, yellows, deep blues, all envelop what many call the most beautiful shape in the world: that of a woman.
The painting, titled Venus Recaptured from her "Flor De Vida" series, is one of the many pieces local visual artist Andrea Arroyo has been working on in preparation for her exhibit "Femenina," which will feature works that, she says, "celebrate women's strength and courage and honor the female body."

Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, Senator Adriano Espaillat, Assemblyman Guillermo Linares, Councilmember Jessica Lappin, CLOTH Executive Director Yvonne Stennett, stand together during the rally for affordable housing held this past Sunday.
Revisiting the theme of the Obama presidential campaign in 2008, local residents, community leaders and elected officials gathered at 172nd Street and Amsterdam Avenue this past Sunday afternoon and chanted, "¡Si se puede! Si se puede!".
The group of more than 100 residents chose the intersection specifically, as it is site of an empty lot for potential affordable housing.
Residents were joined by New York State Senator Adriano Espaillat, New York State Assemblymember Guillermo Linares, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, New York City Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, who had organized the demonstration.
"We have lost over 18,000 people in Community District 12, based on the NYC Planning information. That's a big number," said Councilmember Rodriguez.
In 2004, Mayor Michael Bloomberg acknowledged the need for affordable housing in New York City, and had promised to build or preserve 165,000 units.
As of 2010, less than 1% of the 165,000 units had been built in Northern Manhattan.

CUNY Senior Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson, who helped organize the event, has led a university-wide effort to engage Mexican and Mexican American students to consider higher education. "You are now competing with people worldwide."
"College readiness should begin at the earliest possible age," said Senior Vice Chancellor of the City University of New York Jay Hershenson, who also serves as the Secretary of the University's Board of Trustees.
Vice Chancellor Hershenson spoke to the need for college preparation at CUNY's Information Fair at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, which was held specifically to encourage Mexican and Mexican-American families to consider and plan for higher education.
"Mexican-Americans are living in a city, and a region, with a great public urban university with 24 senior, community and professional colleges [offered] at a low cost where there is financial aid available, so they need to come to these fairs," explained Vice Chancellor Hershenson this past Sat., Mar. 10th.

Rosita Romero, Executive Director of the Dominican Women's Development Center explains the process undertaken in the 'Partners in Research' study, a new partnership with Columbia University and local community based organizations, in which she acted as a Principal Investigator.
Columbia University, with its extensive resources for experimental, social and field research, among many such rigorous pursuits, has often turned to local organizations in northern Manhattan to conduct its studies.
But in one recent instance, the tables were slightly turned.
Due in part to a national grant, the academic institution itself was the subject of scrutiny by some of the same community-based organizations it has focused on in the past.
The aim was to study and identify what strategic steps and interventions could be undertaken by Columbia to help increase community participation to improve health outcomes.

After 35 years of offering local residents dry-cleaning and tailoring services, George will close up his shop, between Cooper Street and Broadway, this week on March 16th.
As much as he has enjoyed working, George, now 80 years of age, says he has finally arrived at the inevitable: retirement.

Activities such as puzzles and games that help encourage seniors' mental agility and memory are encouraged by the VNSNY's care providers.
The advent of age comes with many things: the accumulation of memories, wisdom, and an ability to take the long view in many situations.
It can also sometimes take some of the cognitive and physical vitality that allows for simple routines to be executed seamlessly.
An innovative program available locally is aimed at addressing some of the concerns of aging individuals and their families and looking to keep seniors active, engaged and involved to make for a better quality of life.
VNSNY CHOICE, an affiliate of the non-for-profit health organization Visiting Nurse Services of New York, has deployed a home visiting nurse service in which the providers of care engage in many different activities and efforts specifically intended to keep seniors sharp and healthy.
Moreover, CHOICE is a managed long-term health care plan for New York seniors who are eligible for Medicaid and/or Medicare, so that there are options available for those families on limited incomes.

Saint Patrick, whose feast day is celebrated this week, is said to have used the shamrock, and its three leaves, to explain the Holy Trinity to the then-pagan Irish.
Since his death on 17 March 461, the phrase "the wearing of the green," has come to mean the wearing of a shamrock on one's clothing, or venturing out dressed in vivid emerald green garb to mark what is widely considered the most celebrated saint's day in the world.
St. Patrick's Day has been celebrated in north America since the late eighteenth century, prior even to the American Revolution.
Whether you should choose to wear a favorite green sweater or scarf, cheer along St. Paddy's Day marchers or sip a pint with the regulars, it seems everyone's a little Irish on March 17th.
Here is one way to bring a touch of green home.

Dear State Senator Adriano Espaillat, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Council Member Robert Jackson, CB 12, USTA members, and The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation,
The Washington Heights Tennis Association (WHTA), is a remarkable tennis program for youth in Northern Manhattan. The WHTA offers free group tennis lessons to beginners and intermediates and semi-private lessons to advanced children from ages 5 – 17 all year-round and includes a 10 and Under Tennis component. The president of the WHTA, Eligio Reynoso (Leo), started the program 15 years ago to help kids get off the streets and to introduce them to the game of tennis and its discipline, ethics and teamwork. The Inwood Hill Park tennis courts are the summer home for the WHTA and have not been resurfaced or reconstructed in over 20 years and the courts are not in accordance with USTA standards. The courts only have 15 feet in the back court, and do not meet USTA standards of 21 (19) feet.
The WHTA has been negotiating with the NYC Parks Department to get the Inwood Hill Park tennis courts repositioned, resurfaced, and brought up to USTA standards, not only for the neighborhood and the WHTA program, but also as an alternative practice site for players during the US Open. Top ranked players revealed how difficult it was for them to get practice time on-site during the 2011 US Open. With the Inwood Hill Park tennis courts located next to the Cloisters, they could be a tranquil respite to the hustle & bustle of vying for practice court time at the National Tennis Center, especially for those players staying in Manhattan. Inwood Hill Park would be a perfect place for US Open players to practice and give the community a chance to watch champions play.

The topic was stop and frisk reform, a contentious discussion that has involved elected officials, community leaders, the Mayor, and members of the New York Police Department, including Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
But the failure of local law enforcement to attend Community Board 12's latest public safety committee meeting on Wed., Mar. 7th perplexed both the board and area residents.
Chairwoman Pamela Palanque-North said both precinct commanders had indicated they would attend. But neither Deputy Inspector Barry Buzzetti of the 34th Precinct nor Captain Brian Mullen of the 33rd Precinct were present to defend or discuss any of the controversial stop and frisk tactics employed by the police department.
The committee convened a public hearing to consider a resolution by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.
